Subsistence whaling

Feeding the community
A task some see as fun
Striking at a bowhead whale
When all is said and done
Has a degree of valour
But a species of this kind
That has swum around for two hundred years
A female just to find
Such an awesome creature
Is to give respect not try
To hunt a noble bow head
And to see it die

They never leave the arctic
Not particularly sociable they
Are solitary or move in small pods
Their existence we can say
Is miraculous creation
With the biggest mouth of all
A baleen whale without a dorsal fin
And as a rule

Is slow seemingly confident
57 feet in length
Undeniably miraculous
With unbelievable strength
To break through ice
So to see a young teenager
Just 16
Strike and kill a female whale
is unbelievably mean

And The threat
That such an animal can
Be put to death for being
Anywhere near man
In Gambell they love to eat whales
And AGRAGIIG felt the need
To slaughter this great ocean beast
And be happy to watch it bleed

But its not as if they are starving
And the need is actually there
This boy is at high school
So feelings he has to share
Basically by killing such a venerable
Beast he does
Gain a lot of kudos
And he gets his buzz

And so he struck and slaughtered
This 200 year old whale
And I agree it is wrong who ever kills
The ugly trail
Of blood and guts and life itself
Paul Watson he saw through
The magic of the slaughter
And what this lad did do

And stood up to be counted
Regretting this whale died
And they levelled at him
Remarks of being racial
In his stride
This man puts his life on the line
To try and save all whales
And so to see another slaughtered
Compassion for them fails

Every life that is lost
From creation is a loss too far
The miracle which was this wondrous beast
To go out there and spar
With what is such nobility
Whose age alone is great
Who earned respect with her great size
Who dares compensate?

Creation for such evil
The enormity of the crime
For a sixteen year old to carry this out
Is bound to weigh in time
Complete lack of respect
And a vile inadequacy
A matriarch of such proportions
Met an untimely death
Ill-omened in the scheme of things
To deny her the shared breath

Extinguished by the flood of youth
All pervading and uncouth
Looking to impress it feels
Insensitively it now reveals
Mindless and wanting to a degree
Disorientated possibly
To me an illogicality
A kind of gullibility
Short sighted and gung hoish
And inexperienced actually
Subsistence for the indigenous peoples
Seemingly is shot away
Killing bowheads in the Arctic
Really marks their blackest day
