Marius and the Longleat Lions

Its all about timing

one sweet little ray

a baby giraffe

who wanted to play

it was  so unkind

an unethical way

of managing animals

that’s what I  can say

Zoo’s are an arrogant

entity they

are corporate people

trying to play

at God’s and use Nature

they clearly presume

they can do what they like

with what comes from the womb

Zoo keepers have no rights

in my book, for they

they cannot create

what goes on everyday

in the wilds is one thing

but caged up in a zoo

there are no excuses

for what they now do

I do not accept that its genes

were   too weak

this was a baby

both mild and both meek

to kill it with a captive bolt

gun to the head

and to cut it up in front of people

has led

me to think that the zoo

lacked compassion and I

would boycott that place

the reason is why

the officials deciding to murder this soul

are clearly, in my mind, out of control

other zoo’s

made offers

and clearly

they

saw he had worth and offered

to pay

but  he was an  it not a he anymore

purely a commodity

and they were sure

shoot him

and carve him up

and let him be

fed to the Lions

a tragedy

they killed it and chopped it up

watched by a crowd

many were children

they shouted out loud

feeding the carcass to the lions

so we hear

for  that was the done thing

to me it was clear

it wasn’t the done thing

and didn’t bring cheer

a giraffe lost its life

for nobody’s sake

a life was snuffed out

a poor little rake

of a soul

got no pity

no empathy there

just a captive bolt pistol

and a yard of despair

a response then when asked

that was terribly weak

this zoo should be closed

for people who seek

to end lives not save them

who wants to know

not me and most of us

its a very bad show

then we move onto Longleat

6 Lions  are dead

grown ups and 4 cubs

and where has that led

a bloody furore

the staff there so sad

the juegdment was lousy

the decision was mad

But  zoo’s tend to  do this

I have to exclaim

again they were wrong

and it appears much the same

Humans are clearly

unfit for the task

Longleat a game park

and of course   we ask

why hsalthy Lions and 4 cubs had to die

it doesn’t make sense

we have to ask why

who ever decided their fate

has to go

and perhaps we should look at the facts

and then know

why it was necessary

to put them to death

the valuable iconic

felines   their breath

taken away from them

all of them gone

for me there’s no reason

life maybe goes on

but not for these creatures

and its all down to   man

who made this decision

and I am not a fan

Longleat should close

to me they have reached

a watershed obviously

and they have breached

protocol really

we have to protect

the wild life we have

and here I detect

some other agenda

its just isn’t clear

why they had to die

it raises my fear

that more lovely animals will

meet their end

and for zoo’s really

honestly the message  we send

is re wild the wilderness

forests and plains

lock up your cages

and enclosures, the pains

animals go through so humans

can make

moiney from their lives

when there’s no give just take

to the public at large

is of sadness and woe

wild souls should never

be killed we should know

they have a life and a place

and should be

protected on all counts
