The concept of the improvement of a species is to my mind pure unadulterated arrogance

The concept of improvement
of what was, already perfect
to me smacks of an arrogance
that man, alone can boast
using transgenic methods
and bacterial and viral genes
conferring tolerance to disease
well I can see now
what that means
Round up Ready Soya
Monsanto’s evil brew
that allows those plants
to be sprayed with herbicide
but grow on through
the wild plants they will perish
the soya will remain
the farmer will not have to weed
and everyone does gain
a better crop
it reduces costs
selective herbicides
and less of them
well that’s the promise
and so much now rides
on Rice, Soya and oilseed Rape
and Cotton
Potatoes, Cabbage and Lettuce
for they be
out there in the fields
increasing farmers yields
and bringing home the
viability

The main aim is
increasing profitability
scaled up to what is
industrialised,and we see
transgenic hopes eclipsing
the natural order
despite the living breathing
commodity
a lot more lean meat
tastier than ever
potentially already flavoured
and less costly which
is favoured
traditional farming ties
they then will sever

Transgenics has evolved into
good pharming
a system that began behind
closed doors
appealing to the patient
for it makes wild plants
creative
at producing drugs to order
papering over natural flaws

but really this has muddied
the GM water
for GM foods have come along
and now
well it is out of hand
and its all across the land
and thinking back
one really must ask how
blood clotting agents, insulin
growth hormones and vaccines
monoclonal antibodies
and lacto ferrin means
it can now be included
in the milk which does preclude
the offspring being weaned on it
which is altogether crude

Its complete manipulation
of farm animals
they are to be abused and I believe
its ill advised, unreasonable
and unbalanced
for its motives concern profit
to achieve
rewards that far outweigh
the present systems
the vector here can’t function
any more
they lose their rights
to any natural being
in ethical terms
it just breaks every law

Squarely put its
complete manipulation
a sordid selfish symptom
of our time
it discounts all material thought
its hypothesis is
meaningless,
an unutterable untruth
in which to climb

Where it may lead
I can only wonder
these self styled guru’s
lack the march of time
they exaggerate performance
they magnify result
and misrepresent the outcome
which smacks of the occult
genetic alteration on
a scale envisaged here
is tantamount to meddling
which draws a scale of fear
the animal is living
with an instinct and a brain
but is purely a commodity
for man’s inherent gain

In many ways I am glad
I’m in the autumn of my life
and may not see the outcome
the evil and the strife
the basis leads to a hierarchial
prejudice and that
can only bring disaster
on us all
