Bear Baiting

Imagine a Bear with no
teeth and no claws
clearly a soul who has
been through the wars
captured a while ago
imprisoned he
chained to a wall
and left there to be
humiliated
driven to feel
inadequate
clearly so hard to conceal
its bulk and the terror
it should now portray
but without teeth or claws
it has little to say

the chain cuts deep into
its neck and so there
its hung up now almost in
utter despair
and when its sick handlers
introduce hounds
and they taunt the bear
With their fierce growling sounds
The Bear is aware of the
dangers he’s in
he tries to escape being
bitten, the din
he makes, sees the rent a crowd
low life begin
to shout from the covers
hopeful they win
a bear being bated
oh! they are elated
to get their own back
on a bear, may be so
But this is a weary wild
soul that was taken
from its habitat
where of course it did know
with its claws and its teeth gone
and fed on poor food
it gets fat and forlorn
and very subdued
it doesn’t do exercise
or climb up trees
or chase any hunters
or chase down some Bees
it can’t even scratch
tethered tight to a wall
its out in all weathers
which has to appal
its heartless uncaring
and thoughtless that man
does this to animals
because he can
The bear didn’t harm them
so why someone tell
is this poor starving creature
not treated well?

America yet another so called sport you allow
those that think its manly to do this
realize once and for all, you are despised for harming
wild animals.
