Eddie Lama An enlightened soul Based on the film “Tribe of Heart” The Witness NUMBER 1 ON GOOGLES LISTING 29/6

From the back streets of Brooklyn
He climbed to where now
He’s very much lighter
His perceptions allow
Him to see through
the prejudice
That seemingly
Prevails all around us
and still does sadly

He’s part of a business
Architectural reclaim
and some pretty lady
said, “was he game”?
to look after her kitten
whilst she was away
he hated these things
but she was okay,

So he swallowed his pride
and took the soul in
an ambulatory organism
hoping to win
the heart of this lady
but in fact he found
that the kitten
was loving and
in fact, it wound

its way into him
its emotions were strong
it was such a sweet creature
for years he’d been wrong
He loved her and found that
he needed her there
he wanted to give her the best
and to share.

she had changed his perception
undeniabley so
and his feeling for animals
in general did grow
When the lady returned
the kitten went too
so he took on more cats
and rescued a few

from the building sites
where they were in a poor state
but he loved them
and cared for them
and he felt great
Touching them, loving them
he came to feel
their bodies and legs
they were so real

like drumsticks he thought
like the chicken he ate
just so much more furrier
but just like his pet
how could he eat chicken
something alive
had to be slaughtered
so he could survive

this didn’t seem right
he thought
this cannot be
besides the vast sheds
where the birds
do not see
the sunlight
or peck in the grass
or just be

with themselves for a moment
what was it about
So he stopped eating chicken
Now he had no doubt
and he thought about fur
and how wild souls were caught
in very cruel traps
for their skins they were sought

to be made into coats
into trim it was wrong
that wasn’t where those soft coats
did belong
they belonged to the creature
not some young fur hag
as a trim on some fleece
or on somebody’s bag

this was no reason
to cause so much pain
to the wildest of wild ones
again and again
In His customised lorries
he drove here and there
showing films from his trucks
of the trapped souls despair

people just wandering
out in the street
some visibly moved
by wanton deceit
from the fur industry
the lamentable way
they treated and killed
so many each day

Fauna vision describes
really where Eddie is
his realization
yes it is his
honest conviction
how he has grown
with more profound thoughts
than ever he’d known
a

His mission is out there
You know what he feels
The animals love him
because he appeals
he gives and they give
and he shares and they share
Eddie’s a man who has learned
how to care.

  1. Lorna Flanagan says:

A very moving poem. I have just finished watching the film ‘The Witness’ and then on looking for some more information on this amazing man and what he is doing, I find that the sanctuary he started closed down some years ago. I continued searching for something more up to date and came upon your poem 2012. I still cannot find any information on Eddie Lama. The film was so very moving and inspiring. What happened to him? Do you know?
