“Leon”

The rope was tight around his leg
His flesh torn open wide
Neglect had caused the injury
The rot was deep inside
It must have been so terrible
When we found him lying there
So many tears had fallen
But few were that aware

Human beings clearly
Many fail to see
The pain and the suffering
Of others frantically
A crying out, but few as I have said
Ready to step up and help
And No where to lie his head

Just on the dusty street
More painful everyday
Then animal aid unlimited
Were called and they did pay
Attention to poor “Leon”
A worker all his days
Lying injured waiting for
Somebody to raise

His case before the angels
And today YES seemingly
They came and collected him
And soon he would be free
Of all the vile neglect around
And constant cruelty
He would be with friends who care
Where he wanted to be

Sedated him and removed the rope
And, all the dead skin
Washed and cleaned the wound
Added the maggot powder
Sin
Of this kind, on a working soul
So driven, is for me
The worst kind of neglect in fact
Then we dressed the wound to see

How he felt as the days passed
We brushed him and we cared
Changed his dressings daily
His leg infact was spared
He ate fresh leaves
And we loved him
He was so starving of care
Cuddling him we felt his love
He had so much to share

I dont think anyone before
Has loved him What a shame
They had worked him day and night
There was no one we coukd blame
In his war of
attrition no remission
And heart felt
He recovered and is happy
With the new cards that we’ve dealt

No more heavy loads no ropes
To tear his precious skin
No kicks no punches he
Could stay with us
It was win win
In our yard for Evermore
To roam to rest and be
loved with other donkey friends
For our eternity
