Drilling in the Arctic

Greenland has the courage of their convictions
they are prepared to listen and to see
that drilling for oil in what is the last
great wilderness
could bring about a vast catastrophe
Obama gave the go ahead to Royal Dutch Shell
but due to the public outcry
they agreed
not to drill last year perhaps
they felt the fear
rising for it was rising
indeed
Aleqa Hammond Greenland’s new Prime Minister
has made it now so abundantly clear
licences wont be issued its just not going to happen
the Beaufort and the Chukchi seas, appear
off the drilling map at least for the moment
a million or so people have said No
Petitions have been given to Obama
who wants to see the oil begin to flow
out of there is what Obama’s after
and Russia clearly is now on the case
Cairn Energy has lost its rights to drill there
its applications dead, something to face

we know the Obama camp they do not listen
the people do not matter and it may
happen that they will drill in the Arctic
But Greenland have at last said no no way
after all they live there its their future
the environment is shared across the world
despite the rush for oil around this planet
the threats are there and if we all were hurled
into that sick scenario the future
to mankind would be catastrophic too
sometimes we must stand back and so realise
this is something nobody should do
our greed and arrogance is far from over
but at least Greenland has told the world that they
see the safety of this planet now as paramount
it took courage and lets hope they’ve saved the day

my fear is that Obama sees the Russians
frustration clearly is a now on the boil
they do not care a monkeys about environments
what they care about about of course is OIL
and so the question plays out behind closed doors
announcements will be made, and we will see
fracking has the backing of the oligarchs
and I’m sure the drilling’s will take place and be
the catastrophe that everybody speaks of
for profit and the race to be the first
is too great for the American administration
who if the truth be known to me seems cursed
