“Pauline”

We found her by the roadside
As frightened as she could be
A swollen face we tried to chase
Tried to feed to see
How clearly in some pain she was
Suffering a lot
She wouldn’t eat
Looked dizzy
She was really not
Happy with her lot that day
Disorientated, she
Hated being touched
We felt for her
And let her be

Taking out a blanket
We covered her and she
Wasn’t all that happy
But carried her carefully
Back into the ambulance
And took her to our place
Where care could be administered
Then we saw her face

Close up a wound
Under her throat
Full of maggots, she
We sedated her
And cleaned the wound
And dressed it carefully
Day three
The swelling almost gone
She still stumbled a bit
It took five weeks of nurturing
Till she looked quite fit

In fact she got all frisky
Sprightly tail up she
Tongue out bright eyed pixie
A different girl she be
Street life it is perilous
And clearly “Pauline” had
Suffered very painfully
And had become so sad

In the yard with others
She clearly loved to be
Kissed and cuddled everyday
It’s wonderful to see
An animal transformed in fact
And looking young again
Seeing how she does react
To living without pain
