Wind over the chilterns

Tonight as the autumnal curtains were drawn
A seasonal wind drew its wrath
Gusty and squally and blusterous
Well what felt like frost in its path
The darkness swept in with such fury
September was rushing us by
I left all the towels and the blankets
At the dog rescue centre on high

The road down to Halton is winding
Like a corkscrew its twists and its turns
My headlights picked out all the ghouls and the ghosties
And certain wild eyes which concerns
Me, for as close to the road clearly they
Get one must take care to see
But the wind was just rushing about every which way
Pushing and prodding each tree

Noticeably colder a wood of such worth
Pulling its strength for deep in the earth
Lush overgrown shadows everywhere
Dendritic dangers the wild ones could share
Nobody following all seemed so still
Onto the bypass through berko
The spill
of the leaves of the darkness
a stillness of choice
The light had been sucked from the moment
All I could hear was my voice

Murmuring softly above traffic noise
The dazzle of light forms beyond
The headlights cut pathways into the night
Its the time of the evening I am fond
As light almost vacates the prism
And the curtains of night are so drawn
That amazing sky scape over the hills
Reminding me when I was born

Away far away in the south of this land
In an old suburb fast away
With bombs raging down with sirens that drown
Out the cold comfort a way
Off in the distance the doodle bug sounds
The fire engines ringing the cordite they say
Smoke almost everywhere bangs in my ears
Flashbacks to something that drew from me tears

The dogs would be settled back up on their hill
In the warmth of their beds far from the chill
Dreaming their dreams no doubt glad to be there
Reliving the stories all those dreams they share
With each other all hearing the wind in the trees
Their tummies full now may they seize
Their time to remember their lives
Lucky that each of them still now survives
