In the land of the giants
For Hedgehogs you see
We live in your world
Surprisingly
It’s awfully dangerous
Because we are small
We walk very slowly
We do as a rule
Humanity sadly
Seldom does share
So We the unseen
Have to be more aware
In gardens, in compost heaps
Leaf stacks where we
Can perish in bonfires
So easily
Out on the street
Through forested places
Cars driving fast
Put us all through our paces
We tend to operate
Later in the day
But life is extraordinary
That much we can say
0n woodland edges
Conifer Forests
Moorlands, in gardens
Often we see
Saucers of milk
Left out by you people
Tempting us but it never should be
Lactose is horrible
We cannot drink it
Yes it is tempting
But sickens us so
We prefer earwigs worms slugs
And beetles
God given foodstuffs
That help us to grow
Too many people these days
Concrete over
The lovely front gardens
Outside their front doors
That’s where they drive
Leave their cars
When they get home to
The beautiful gardens
Under the stars
Which Are disappearing
Dissuading us really
To stay in the parks
Where municipal spray
All sorts of chemicals
Vile and obtrusive
Cocktails of death
Keeping insects at bay
In the land of the giants
It’s really hard going
We need human beings
To help us a bit
At least remember
At night we are out here
Our very survival
Depends on it.
