Charlie

Charlie existed
He loved and he lost
He ate himself silly
That was the cost
Of crying each day
Of being reminded
How lost he found himself
He was just blinded

By the very existence
That he never had
No family to speak of
He was no dad
Dispirited death style
Uncared for his thought
A lost soul in a maelstrom
Of ugliness caught

Like a fish on a hook
In a net that was he
Dragged breathless choking
Out of the sea
Legs thick with fat
Veins bulbous sore
Sick as a dog
Dying on the sea shore

Face in the sand
Hair in the weed
Salt in his ears
He was starting to bleed
The cry of the gannets
They would peck out his eyes
He could now feel the froth
And could now realise

He didn’t have anything
Jetsam was he
Tossed off the cliff
And into the sea
Nobody loved him
Nobody cared
His shoal swam away
He wouldn’t be spared

Brine in his lungs
Salt in his soul
His end was nigh
Deep in a hole
He stared up at the sky
As blue as could be
Remembering Ahab
And Dear Moby.
