“Baloo”

A very old dog
Was lying alone
Tucked around a bush
His spirit had flown
Curled and suffering
Flies everywhere
A great open wound on his stomach
To share
With the wriggling maggots
Busily feeding
His ear half torn off
Which had clearly been bleeding
Lost to the world
Not a friend anywhere
Nobody saw him
Just lying there
His bones all protruding
A real sorry state
We lifted him carefully
He was no weight
Wrapped in our blanket
We took him to see
The angels and laid him down
So carefully

Used maggot powder all over him
And
Bandaged the wounds
Yes understand
We have to kill all of them
Thats what we do
Sedate him and clean all his wounds
Hose him through
He must have been in the most
Terrible pain
He lay there so broken
So much disdain
For life his big eyes
Mournful and serene
Anxious and fretting
I am sure he had been

we cut away all of the necrotic skin
Removed his right ear
He was hoping
to win
Through we were sure
By day 25 he was still
Very weak
With cuddles and care
And love he did seek
All of our ladies loved him
And he
Dear little “Baloo”
Pulled through
He was free

From all of that pain
And suffering he
Began just to play
In the dust every day
One eared and old
But raring to go
To be with our ladies
Ahead of the show
