“Angelo”

We got a call from someone
A donkey sadly had
collapsed and was lying in a shed
Clearly feeling bad
Plastic rope around his legs
Had torn into the skin
Wounding them and exposing them
To flies that had crawled in
Clouds of flies were buzzing
Maggots crawling too
Eating up the flesh
The stench was awful
It was true
He must have suffered greatly
They were gnawing away
At his flesh each moment
Every single day

We went ofcourse to see him
And his pain seemed so intense
It was hard to get him on his feet
It really made no sense
We managed with help to get
Him back to the hospital where
We sprayed his legs with powder
To kill the maggots that were there
When we undid the dressings
We picked off every one
Bunches of them cleaned the wounds
And when the day was done
He laid still cleaned and comforted
And we did this everyday
Loved him kissed him cared for him
And he proved he was way
Braver than we could imagine
For before too long we saw
He was up and joining in with eating
No one could ignore
Angelo just joining in
With the other animals there
A motley bunch of donkeys dogs and cats
That all did share

Their day a few weeks earlier
All were at deaths door
With a little love and tenderness
They were here all of them sure
Fine and dandy expressing
Their love for feeling good
And animal aid unlimited
Did everything they could
