Goddess Ballachulish

Undeniable there she lay
2000 years
Essentially
Her eyes were face downwards, she
Her quartzite eyes perpetually
Searching through the peaty realms
Where Oblivion just overwhelms
The spirit cancels out the light
Intrinsically forced to bite
Down on spagnum moss of old
An inherency or so I am told

Being aware of the flowing loch
And related ericaceous stock
Sedges green that would provide
A bed of peat in which to hide
Hewn from alder hard yet straight
Grain fulfilling every trait
Rescued back in 1880
A childs height so not that weighty
A world of difference having fell
What turned out to be a spell
Of two thousand years
Of contemplation
Possibly a transformation
Recalling light
But seeing darkness
Ballachulish goddess
Maybe
Orientation of the night

A large right eye staring directly
Unwaveringly perhaps correctly
A small left eye invokes a state
Of dreaming to potentiate
A conscious thought, a sequel to
2000 years held good and true
The ground in which the lass did lay
Saw cairns and barrows rituals play
Sharing the peaceful unity
And the true divinity.

Now housed in Edinburgh
