Yellowstone The wolves

The summer sun was hotter still
And some sprinklers had been left on
To dampen down the pasture
So not all the grass had gone
Which attracted the ground squirrels
To delay their hibernation
To get about and eat the seeds
For them it was salvation

The Pinnacle Peak Pack
Were a pack of wolves
Still doing well
Eleven pups between two females
That alone did tell
Anyone observing that these wolves
Knew their stuff
They were very adaptable
To conditions that were tough

They had a real good strategy
For catching the squirrels too
Something they had not done before
But they worked out what to do
Three of them were cornering the guards
And pouncing they
Caught lots of them and fed their pups
With rich protein on that day

Phenomenal and physical and all that entails
Down to human activity which truthfully just pales
Into real significance how fortune is ascribed
To those who are successful as I had described

Climate change and the animals the survivors really will
Push ahead like warriors and have their share of kill
Whats going on inside their heads how are we to know
But they make their own good fortune
thats the difference thats on show
