Improbity

The elephant
Great pachyderm Of this day
With tusks that creation
Thought to allay
What would be problematical
Without simple tools
But of course failed to account
For the most corrupt of
fools

The local people
The Government who
Took on their power
To do what they wanted to
As such they lacked conscience
And insincerity
Sinking, into crime
And complicity

In practical terms
Such racketeering
Such faithlessness
The betrayal of steering
A course into betrayal of good
Into double dealing
Just feeling they could

And those great tusks
Of Ivory hard as the rock
Worth their weight in gold
As such could be sold
In the shadows of power
Where the illicit flower
Where the unscrupulous flourish
And the great shameless tower

It only seems right
To go with the flow
Not to be squeamish
Let the bank balance grow
Safe in the knowledge
That if I do not do
What I like in this job
Others will view

Me as the fool
For my warrant was vast
It’s not an affront
When my Net I can cast
People respect me
Have reverence for
Me I am powerful
Like never before

So what’s a few elephants
Nothing they say
What’s sacrilegious about it
A way
Of being respected
And getting what’s right
And a few little wrongs
If kept out of sight

Do not harm anyone
That’s how they feel
Addicted to crime
And of course they conceal
The cruelty aspect
The caustic control
The unloving uncaring
Loss of their soul

And as time passes
Greed and some more
More victims perish
More blood and gore
Lies told and more lies
That’s what we see
More elephants perish
Such hostility

And then we get caught
Someone dobs us in
Thats when we realise
That we did sin
That’s when the shit hits the fan
So to say
That’s when we lose it
That’s when we pay

But out in the shadows
The elephant clan
Many have perished
Since we began
They died some were poisoned
Dying in pain
Some were chopped up
Again and again
These evil men
Must be rooted out
And strung up
Examples of what’s it’s about
