The great Migration

Vast numbers of animals leave the Serengeti
Really in their millions they drive into Maasai
From Tanzania into Kenya where the pastures are sweet and green
Once a year they make this trip
Its a long trip and its mean

1.7 million Wildebeest will head the charge
In a surging blast of hooves they run
The racket fills the sky
Joined by gazelles and Zebra and eland even too
They make this hazardous journey
Its what they have to do

An army a great mass of flesh on legs
Creates a sound
kicks up the dust each violent thrust
In energy they are drowned

Amazing ululation an orchestra of sound
Music of the masses seemingly around

The carnivores are waiting everyone is there
To pick off any stragglers and those less aware

The have to cross the water and are frightened by it they
Suffer very seriously in the Mara for they say

Its packed with hungry crocodiles who know and will be there
So clearly there are victims that the carnivores will share

They congregate at river edges instinctively they know
Where the fords are where its not as deep depending on rains
And flow

Invariably they will go in one great spurt a crashing run
A great tidal wave of bodies not wanting to be outdone

They really really run hard crashing loudly through
The water hopeful they can make the crossing and some do

Others will get picked off by the ravenous who know
this is their chance for fresh meat too and of course help them to grow

That rich green Maasai Mara vegetation draws them on
They love all of its goodness which they want to feed upon

And they go through hell and high water to reach their paradise
Clearly they are enlightened and as such it does suffice

It really is an amazing sight this collective movement does
Come to our eyes easily with all its amazing buzz

Its compelling its such drama its the meaning of life
The greatest affirmation burying any strife

It is instinctive knowledge they know where to go
No maps no bloody sat navs head down enjoy the show

A majority of mentors to guide them on their way
Most in fact do make the trip and it with their strength they
pay

Their dogged concentration tireless through and through
Unflagging and indefatigable they just know what to do
