The kings of the jungle
magnificent animals
have reached a level of interest
from some
who will shoot them and kill them
for financial gain
a cash cow in fact
and the hum
of a truck full of poachers
the bones fetching thousands
the skin has a value
the flesh used as meat
what is now remarkable
Lions have a rarity
and so do the markets
which surely unseat
they grow by the day
this spectacular earthling
is needing protection
its glory and power
has been frittered away
whats seen as its market
its value thats rising
infact every day
there may be 300o Lions left
in the wildness
another 8000 bred
to be shot
this the progression
and darkness surrounding
the king of the jungle
probably now is not
for habitat loss
has taken a great toll
brought the wild souls much closer
and we
see a growing acceptance
of capture and slaughter
and reasons to do it
are lucratively
out there
there’s markets developed
to do this
markets established
at home and abroad
the Lion once a formidable
adversorial prospect
is now easy pickings
which some can afford
Lions need protection
from us
from our greed
Lions have such value
and where it does lead
is to markets and people
ready to try
to kill and dismember
its value is high
its rarity growing
a market where we
see more and more interest
where more purposefully
go out of their way
to involve themselves in
the business of murder
perhaps for their skin
in the last 50 years
the great human mind
has devleoped a liking
for all it can find
that can make lots of money
and establish a way
to not even think
what now happens today
to hunt and to do it
just for the game
for the infamy
obvious and for the claim
that you’ve shot a lion
that you above all
with a shot or a bolt
answered the call
got the result
that camaraderie
that spunk that flows
where ever the great hunter man
kind of goes
in certain quarters
this lust is there’s
the Lion though
is not party
to those affairs
he’s now a commodity
and he’s bought and sold
and in effect
worth his weight in gold
So protection is sought
for if he is to be
around for much longer
in wild lands to see
man has to take stock
has to put up a fight
against other men
ready to kill
yes on sight
and that’s where we are
those who would kill
and those who would
fight to save him
the thrill for them both
is a thrill they take on
who wins
who can say
till the last Lion has gone
then we will know
then we shall see
and that may be not too far off
tragically
