Louisa cottages
stand sublime
peacefully,
passing the time
a pigeon on the roof
does mime
another with a cooing call
flies away
then begins to fall
over the tranquil
idyll, all
set in rolling countryside
where centuries ago
the Romans ventured to this
place
to the trees beyond that grow
sentinels, their spirits
of every shade of green
decorate with gentleness
the everchanging scene
Rosemary, Sage and Lemon Balm
and Lavender forever calm
a rhapsody of purple haze
with a fragrance
that stays for days
in ones head
and in one’s heart
as the muse may soon depart
a holly hock its blossoms shy
peep out at me
and I wonder why
the honey suckle’s sweet refrain
is setting forth to bloom again
black painted woodwork
and cobbles white
a good stout door
an aura bright
a nest hangs fast
and resident
a robin family
heaven sent
tirelessly they work
away collecting
in their funny way
curious as to why I be
observing them it seems to me
Louisa cottages
quaint and calm
120 years of charm
if we were to go back
all that way
to perhaps a beautiful
sun drenched day
when out in the field
two lovers lay
who had just moved in
to No.3
the Morris smythe’s at No
4
had gone and painted
their kitchen door
a sort of orange
like sun drenched hay
and it all happened
on that day
Victoria was the wondrous Queen
Her prime minster Gladstone had been
around a while
a liberal soul
and of Uganda we took control
Louisa cottages
stand sublime
and an inspiration
for this rhyme
