Greece (a dog story not steeped in glory)

Greece is heading toward
the cruellest place now in the world
what some people do to animals
all of this unfurled
and its tantamount Hell on earth now
and to evil everyday
the digest comes and the victims
are in our face
the way
Greece now seems to be handling
its problems tragically
is its taking it out on its animals
creating a purgatory
Today, out in Evros
a dog found in a bin
covered in multiple scratches
in complete misery
badly burned and so very thin
this is terrible torture
of the voiceless
and thrown in a bin
to die
with its back legs tied up tight
with string
and it lies there asking why?

What had it done to deserve all this
it had never barked out loud
it had never scratched the furniture
or tried to chase a cloud
it had acted as a guard dog
and had warned its master well
despite the food he gave it
despite the life of Hell

he had really been a good boy
obedient all his days
so how come he was now beaten up
and devoid of all praise
it just was not appropriate
it really wasn’t fair
and being thrown in a garbage bin
to die and to be aware
of the lack of true compassion
of
being unloved too
to go to meet one’s maker
with such thoughts
does things for you

a finality of reasoning
no way back after all
to really come to terms with it
is really the worst call
laying down your head feels heavy
tears well up in your eyes
your heart is beating rapidly
as you realise
the terror that is coming
the sorrow that you feel
the horror of the moment
how your passing will be real

you close your eyes
you say goodbye
winding down you know
you will never open your eyes again
you never ever go
anywhere you are finished
a lifeless bag of bones
tossed into the landfill
and covered up with stones
