Orangutan roped up and sitting in a cage

The ropes that bind
this great red soul
that somehow want to so control
a free range thinker
of the tree tops
who only had herself to please

call yourselves a sentient breed
coming from a higher seed
don’t fool yourselves
your prisoner here
is more evolved than you
its clear

your lack of understanding
of the ways of forest life
disproves your sentient
quality
and cuts you as a knife
would cut you
for this orangutan
needs freeing
from the shackles of mankind
and allowed to reach the canopy
for unlike you
she’s not blind

her patience is her virtue
and virtue is for her
a spirit that will drive her
perhaps you may concur
that what you’ve done
lacks common sense
there no good reason here
my suggestion to you
is free her
give her back some cheer

untie those ropes
and pat her
and send her on her way
back up into the canopy
to spend each
fruitful day
watching down on you
lot
in many ways she’s begun to
guide you through
those fantasies
that apparently you’ve spun
