The road to no where ( not far from Avebury)

The road to no where
took us some where
into fields of mud
and god knows what
and a lot of sweat
and not a little blood

sentinels in black
were on the right side
deep ditches full of ooze
were on the left
the track led ever onwards
full of wheels and ruts
every single one of them
bereft

of any semblance
really of a surface
so reversing was impossible to do
the wheels were sliding
everywhere was hazardous
no signal
on the sat nav
what to do?

everything seemed haywire
and all the while the
adrenaline
you could sort of feel
which I have to say
not with a little fright
and an inner fire was burning
and because of the conditions
little scope for turning

but finally we made it
despite the awful mud
despite a lot of nervousness
and the raising of our blood
but a bond clearly developed
a linkage a rapport
that took us to a level
just not felt before

( which I so count my lucky stars for)
