Dairy, the cows, their nightmare, our ignorance

There was a time
when cows were all
in fields to ruminate
to feel the sunshine on their backs
their life in fact was great
buttercups and daisies
clovers shepherds purse
fresh green grass
was everywhere
but my god it got worse

the birth of supermarkets
exit the milkman who
delivered milk
in bottles everyday to you
the giants they took over
and the little man was gone
now it was the corporate
the giants the big con

mega farms supplying
the mega bloody store
fighting with each other
on price
and a lot more
margins hit and suddenly
a brutal trade was born
out went the green fields
that cows knew
in came the concrete
dawn

no more sunshine
on their backs
no more the fresh green
sward
concrete stalls
a vast great shed
and what we could afford

Gm Soya, anti biotics
yea the new regime
and fresh green grass
of all of that
it just became a dream
a nightmare
a reality
took over and we saw
measured scientific crap
brought in and what is more

cruelty personified
for dairy cows who lay
in their faeces many of them
every single day
calves got short shrift
caged up and then used for veal
or slaughtered by the butchers
from hell who did conceal

their crimes from all and sundry
for that is what they do
the dairy cow is put upon
and most don’t have a clue
they are crowded together
and do get stressed and lame
killed off early
its all wrong
it just is not the same

fighting over profits
and margins, the big boys
skull duggery a’ fore thought
most don’t hear the noise
but the victims are the animals
that used to rightly roam
now its concrete stalls
that they must call their home

its evil
its bound up in
economics
that is all
and the public gulp their white
stuff down
and ignorantly call

for more and more
and get it
from the lovely superstore
who has changed the life
of the sweet cow
perhaps for evermore

but then they didn’t stop there
the greed was in their heart
then they got the cows to give
much more and to impart
more of their natural freedom
more for less the call
and started several processes
that does affect us all

and again it was about margin
and profit and the stuff
the bankers saw as important
they never had enough
processes were brought in
to extend the products life
which has denatured the white stuff
and caused us all more strife

in America Monsanto a giant
they could see
that they could really control us all
and the markets too now be
beholden to the leader
the recombitant brigade
who have introduced the franken cows
and of course we all have played

into their vast fortunes
and gone for broke where they
play down the threats of long term loss
and anatomical decay
the cows are the victims
their lives have been curtailed
their stress levels have soared
into the sky
their health has paled
into no significance
and their by product we see
is methane
and global warming
down to the factory
the natural world is reeling
the cow’s put down and left
downtrodden and forgotten
and organically bereft
