Onwards and Upwards the Ghan’s final leg of its journey to Darwin

Onwards and upwards
The Ghan leaves Alice Springs
to find its way
Up into the outback
Its hot now everyday
through Tennant Creek
to Katherine
where termite mounds
you’ll see
the Katherines River’s
13 gorges
that is unlikely
across the Adelaide River
on a bridge that cost the earth
It was finished 4 months earlier
than the contract said, so worth
a great deal for the river below it
let me tell
is filled with “saltie” crocodiles
so to fall in would be Hell
Kakadu and Litchfield
and Nitmiluk parks are
pretty close to all of this
and Darwins not that far
From the airport to the city
mangroves along the street
are not frequented by swimmers
who might end up as fresh meat
For the hungry saltie crocodiles
that are around these parts
The Ghan signs off in Darwin
and breaks a few old hearts
