Lycra and beyond from under the cabbage palm

40 degrees and rising
isn’t it surprising
some feel faint
some really ain’t
cut out for this alas
they gulp their
bottled water
like they’ve been told
they ought ‘a
and clad in royal blue lycra
they whistle passed my door

trainers costing more
than those who made them in Korea
earn in probably 2 months
in the sweat shops, it was clear
and now laced up and ready
in all this lycra gear
they get out of their 4×4’s
and start their run from here
I am sitting underneath
a cabbage palm
I’m composing odes thats
what I do
40 degrees and rising
isn’t it surprising
some feel sick
they pick
this day its true

its far too hot
to show their
calves and ankles
honest mum,
its daf’t to jog today
at 40 degrees and rising
They’re realising
they really need
to go and hide away
