Working elephants

LAos land of a million Elephants
Thats its name to fame
But actually the numbers
Do not meet the claim
There might be 1000 wild ones
And The 500 or so
Used as working specimens
Its horrendous as we know
They work at some locations
Violently like slaves
Tugging timber day in day out
Many to their graves
Its terribly laborious
And does their feet and back
In in just one season
Its like an attack

Every 12 weeks they come back
To rest a while and eat
To have a hard earned rest a while
For slaving in this heat
Is killing and life shortening
“Abassee slaves” they are called
Allowed to rest and put up their feet
And not feel overhauled

This in itself is an investment
For fhe elephants health alone
But you can feel they do need respite
More than most have known
They come back shocked snd stifled
Their feet an aching mess
Whatever injury they now suffer
They just cannot redress
Without the need for others
To assist and let them be
Which the mahouts call
a holiday the term is “abassed”
Their poor legs do go through it
Their suffering immense
Reality shoukd tell us all
This treatment makes ni sense
