Wolves

Wolves are an anathema
from man’s own sad creation
that ghostly howl
from that hairy jowl
that spirit of damnation
pack animals whose instincts
are immense and as a bond
can fight whatever corner
and from it then abscond

free spirits in the wilderness
with power beyond belief
and an apex predator
who can put their world to grief
they hone the other species
into a better shape in fact
with their relentless selection process
that really does attract

for more true attention
from our white coats than you’d know
for they are true survivors
part of the big flow
they understand the environment
they live in and we see
them successful in a broader sense
so a threat to those who be

on the earth as masters
the ranchers and their kin
guilty of peddling flesh and blood
which is a mortal sin
predation of the carnivore
is one thing but we see
the humanoid now consuming
more and more unnecessarily

and why is this do you imagine
it will shorten their span
look at the giant tortoise
and the elephant the plan
to reduce their time consuming
from say 100 down to ten
means the population explosion
sees a shortening and by then

the carnivore lives a shorter life
than the vegetarian breed
but the wolves are seen in a different light
we have harmed them and must concede
a lot of why they are hated
is the fiction we have spread
we have humanized them in the horror
stories we have read

in fact they are the hunter
they have no one who can say
there is a better fitter hunter
out there, anyway
and so they are a threat to man
who walks beside them and
doesn’t see their true worth
and doesn’t understand

the first people they were of the land
they knew the wolf and they
respected him for what he was
and both walked the same way
the rancher on the other hand
comes from a new domain
based on corporate wisdom
and a heart full of disdain

for all the wandering spirits
who walk the wilder path
whose ceilings are the sky above
and the baked sod is their hearth
the forest are their 4 walls
the air they breathes is clean
they run hard up against the wind
and are forever lean

and thus a threat to those
who sink into the avid mire
who sup the distilled liquor
and consume the flesh so dire
this is not the flesh of wild souls
it is factory farmed meat
the animals were sedentary
fed on GM wheat
and soya from those miles beyond
where pesticides were used
where every single blade of grass
and meadow was abused

the wolf presents a challenge
to their superiority
he is a canny fellow
with a brain to match and he be
up to their shenanigans
and thus presents his threat
and thus the lobbying masses
will see him as their debt

and so they pass their lurid laws
and call him a sick name
anyway they can create
any kind of blame
they will and do
and continue to hound him
for they know
he has the better of them
because he’s in the flow

there are folks, who appreciate
the wolf and what he does
they understand his prowess
he gives the world that buzz
but money talks in rancher land
and the politicians hear
the sounds of counting dollar bills
and that fine sound does cheer

and so the march to freedom
for the wolf is dire and long
will he, wont he, I don’t know
the strength of feelings strong
in both camps
one is money based
the other heartfelt, and they
often do not have the funds
to take the case and pay

those pipers with the measly power
and this can sometimes be
the difference for a species
as we see in history
My hope is that the wolf survives
the vagaries of those
who fill their bodies
with dead flesh
and try to superimpose
their politics on others
on free thinkers in the flow
that walk the paths of freedom
and spiritually grow
