Lone and I decided
\nit would take about a day
\nto go and see some friends
\nof ours Grey Wolf and Bold, away
\nacross the Silver Mountain
\nand so a break of day
\nWe skirted down past
\nGrey Eagles camp
\nand out across the bay
\nAlong the marsh at Bringham
\ninto the forest dark,
\nacross the border
\nby the tall cascade
\nIt was a long long way.
\nTrees grew close together
\na lot of spindly birch
\nand Holly with its powerful thorns,
\nwe always are in search
\nof earthworms,voles
\nand anything.
\na snack to keep us strong
\nand then we both heard
\na strange yelp
\nbut something sounded wrong
\nWe came upon a thicket
\nand there before our eyes,
\nA darling little puppy dog
\na proper little prize
\nHanging off a wolf trap
\ntied on with some cord
\nLive bait to attract us wolves
\na nice fresh warm reward
\nThe little soul was yelping
\ntelling us that we
\nMust keep away
\nhe was a lure
\nbut we went down to see
\nKeep away he yelped
\nthis trap is mean’t
\nfor one of you
\nWell there was no way
\nwe would eat him
\nAnd we saw it as danger too<\/p>\n
So we used our ingenuity and freed the little soul
\nHow brave he was,
\nstuck in the dark
\nbut still in such control
\nAble to warn us,
\nhaving the gall to do that
\nWe thought, we
\nWould save the little critter
\ntry to set him free
\nWe do not eat dogs,
\nthey are deemed as family
\nand so we took him to see
\nGrey and Bold
\nThey lived in a cave too,
\nits entrance underneath a tree,
\na great long tunnel
\nthat was very cold
\nBut it opened out into
\na large rock area
\nWith stalactites
\nand crystals all aglow
\nAnd there was Grey and Bold
\nwith all their family
\nSitting calmly on a ledge below<\/p>\n
We rubbed noses,
\nsniffed each other
\nkissed and generally
\nChatted about the old days
\nfor a while
\nThen realised the time
\nwas passing rapidly
\nWe needed to put in
\nthat extra mile
\nWhen we left the entrance
\nit was pitch black
\nThe moon was masked in clouds
\nand so we ran
\nBack to Silver Mountain
\nwhere the wind was coming up
\nAnd light snow
\nas we got there it began
\nAn owl or too said twit a taroo
\nit startled us
\nWe each caught several voles
\nalong the way
\nChomping on their bones
\nwith canine overtones
\nAnd got back home
\njust at the break of day
\nIt had been quite a journey,
\nbut it was good to see our friends
\nWe were happy we had met
\nthat pup and hope that’s where it ends
\nClearly the men of IOWA the hunting mob descend
\nlower than lowest low
\nto trap and pin our friend
\nOn that trap just
\nto lure us in,
\nman certainly succeeds
\nin reaching lows of thoughtfulness
\nTo match those dreadful deeds<\/p>\n
