A battery of cages
\nno water
\njust a drain
\nunder one’s feet
\nof wire that lets
\nthe excrement
\nthat’s lain
\neventually
\ndrop into
\na bowel and that is that
\nthis is called existence
\nand this is where I was at<\/p>\n
Thanks to men and batteries
\nmy home was a small cage
\nand here I stood in purgatory
\nfor an utter age
\nin pain a dirty dishevelled rake
\nthat lays and egg or two
\nbut as soon as that stops
\nhappening you are sent
\nto oblivion, you<\/p>\n
a chicken of the new age
\nthis vile life cloaked in pain
\ndarkness evil nothing else
\nyou are struggling in vain
\nuntil a day when rescued
\nby ALF and that appeals
\nthe sunshine on your feathers
\nyou know now how that feels<\/p>\n
some worms a piece of apple
\neven a slug or two
\npecking at a grassy verge
\nthis is what chickens do<\/p>\n
and I am one such chicken
\nrescued, I can say
\nI said goodbye to the evil
\nthe vile the dull decay
\nto those gruesome sheds
\nand those cages
\nand the ugly tribe who came
\nto sometimes change our water
\nbut, it was them I have to blame<\/p>\n
they spilled the water every time
\nthey were clumsy and inept
\nso we were left to cry inside
\nnobody’s adept
\nto those wires that cut into my feet
\nand on them I couldn’t stand
\nwe fall about in agony
\nin our heads we all have planned<\/p>\n
the great escape but seldom
\ndo we get the chance to fly
\nand most who have attempted it
\nof course each one did die
\nbut still to leave this prison
\nthis inhuman hell hole we
\nwould do anything so I’m fortunate
\nthe pure daylight to see<\/p>\n
my rescuers were women
\nwith lovely smiles, for me
\nsoft hands a lovely attitude
\nangels I could see
\nthe battery was a nightmare
\nbut a heavenly place is where
\nI now am, and its good to be alive
\nagain and to share<\/p>\n
all the wild simplicity
\nof freedom in the field
\nthe sun the breeze the companionship
\nand all that that does yield
\nthe loving from the humans
\nso different from where I
\nhad come to live and thought in fact
