The Dandelions now represent the fallen
\neach one a soldier cloaked and battle scarred
\nbeyond we see the moat of living wonderment
\ndecked in heavy reeds and richly starred
\nin bygone years it offered protection for those who
\nlooked down from their battlements
\nand shot their arrows through
\nnow just crumbling ruins
\nbut still with eyes to see
\nand remember all those fallen
\nsouls
\nwho continue still to be<\/p>\n
Berkhamsted Castle’s peace and quiet
\nits aura flanked and green
\njust Dandelions and Daisies
\nplanted by the queen<\/p>\n
I close my eyes a moment
\nI seem to hear a drum
\nbeating in the distance
\nbehold an army’s come
\nthe men in full regalia
\nare shouting as they run
\narrows flying everywhere
\nthe fighting has begun<\/p>\n
and I am here as witness
\njust laying here alone
\nnobody can see me
\nwith great stone shots
\nbeing thrown
\ncrashing through the battlements
\ntearing out the towers
\nmen are falling all around
\nthese are their darkest hours<\/p>\n
the dandelions now represent
\neach soul that fell that day
\nand everywhere one casts their eyes
\nin every single way
\nwe see those rows those memories
\nthose very gallant souls
\nwho stormed that well armed garrison
\nwith their simple pikes and poles<\/p>\n
the screaming of the catapults
\nthe great stones through the air
\nthe molten oil the agony
\nthat many of them share
\nMay provides that cloak of gold
\nthose shafts of eternal light
\nand the goddess watches over them
\npurposeful and bright<\/p>\n
Today alone I pictured
\nit all before my eyes
\nable to imagine
\nand re live the demise
\nof many many soldiers
\nwho gave their lives so free
\nsacrificed their all
\nfor their dear queen
\nwho I did see<\/p>\n
she looked across the water
\nfrom the trees forever wild
\nwith her arms she beckoned to me
\nI felt just like a child
\nwitnessing this horror
\nas I had once again
\nenvisaged and remembered
\nfrom a former life
\nthe chain<\/p>\n
broken for a moment
\nenabling me to see
\nhow I had lost touch with life
\nand with my history
\nand sitting here alone today
\nI revisited that place
\nit just brought it all back to me
