The Leopard is an adaptable
\nand wily predator
\nshe’s secretive and knowledgeable
\nto boot
\nshe normally patrols
\nand area of10 sq miles
\nand dressed in what is her
\nmottled suit
\nwhich offers her
\na great system of camouflage
\nand a half a million or so
\ndo exist
\nshe’s sort of like a shadow
\nrarely is she seen
\nbut she is quite close
\nto many souls
\nbut few will have known she’s been
\nclose to them in townships
\nor in cities
\nshe of course
\nshe does stay in the shadows
\nand remains a potent force<\/p>\n
with cubs she is consistent
\nshe knows her enemies
\nother leopards, lions of course
\nand the chimpanzees
\nhyena’s always on the prowl
\nso her eyes are everywhere
\nshe lives in caves
\nnear thorny bush
\nawake to all despair<\/p>\n
she may make a kill
\nand leave it
\nif a lion should
\ncome to call
\nshe weighs less than
\nmost humans
\nas a queen she does
\nnot rule
\nshe ‘d rather
\nleave her quarry
\nand go and hunt again
\nfor she could be
\na victim
\nbut she has a clever brain<\/p>\n
she can climb
\nwith such intensity
\nher body weight is why
\nLions can climb but not as high
\nand clearly will fight shy
\nand she is very able
\nto catch smaller prey
\nand so she can survive
\na lean time so to say<\/p>\n
she is a patient hunter
\nmoves slowly unperturbed
\nworks with wits
\ncan visualize
\nher ebulliance
\nshe has curbed
\nit is probably this
\nintelligence she possesses
\ngets her through
\nthat sets her apart
\nfrom the many
\nwho take an aggressive view<\/p>\n
she would rather slope
\noff quietly
\nto fight another day
\nthough rather than fight
\nlike a sorcerer
\nher magic is in play<\/p>\n
she is curious and has courage
\nand her instinct
\ndoes her proud
\nancestrally she’s with it
\nshe seems one of the crowd
\nbut in point of fact
\nshe’s secretive
\nand can wander night and day
\nand is rarely seen
\nby anyone
\nfor rumours are that they<\/p>\n
she may live close to the margins
\nand may visit places where
\nwe’ve gobbled up their habitat
\nand planted houses there
\nin that case they may visit
\nand forage in the dark
\nperhaps go to a store room
\nbut never leave their mark<\/p>\n
recessive genes can sometimes
\nthrow
\na black knight into view
\nwe call it a panther
\nand other people too
\nare excited by this leopard
\nthis shadow in the night
\nwho hunts with all the prowess
\nof a seriously bright light<\/p>\n
never, seen as ungainly
\nan expert in the trees
\ncan climb out of a river
\nas easy as you please
\ncarrying a heavy kill
\nthis animal can flee
\nquite a mean assassin
\nwhen it wants to be<\/p>\n
a master of disguise
\na night cat best unseen
\nthe problems for the leopard
\nnocturnally life’s mean
\nthe bigger cats are hunting
\nand she just has to be
\nup to it, and on the ball
\nfor for her that is the key<\/p>\n
as lions and tigers
\nstruggle
\nthe leopard carries on
\nincreasing wandering here and there
\npart of the great throng
\nable to diversify
\neat snakes and gerbils she
\nis the perfect predatator
