Let’s apologize to the elephants
\nand to those souls who have died
\ncut down by a blistering ring of bullets
\nthat denied
\na family, their inheritance
\nbecause of ivory
\nand now in Kenya at the airport
\na Vietnamese we see<\/p>\n
with almost 500 bangles
\nhis contraband of blood
\nof inheritance and
\nof futures
\nbehold there is a flood<\/p>\n
of tears from all the elephants
\nand from this, old poet too
\nwho feels the loss
\nand who knows the cost
\nin the suitcase now on view<\/p>\n
488 bangles
\nnew ivory, clearly
\nthey have abused
\nthe future
\nand tried apparently<\/p>\n
to disguise the fact
\nby painting them
\nhoping to succeed
\nby saying they
\nwere soapstone
\nbut soapstone
\ndoesn’t bleed<\/p>\n
that trail of blood
\nit stretches
\nfrom the scene of carnage to
\nthat case
\nthe evil and depravity
\nof the human race<\/p>\n
to brutalize the elephants
\nfor financial gain
\nlet’s apologize to all of them
