When the mammoth trudged
\nAcross the land
\nAll those years before
\nThe hedgehog
\nHeard his rumbling
\nDeep inside it\u2019s core
\nThis laborious great pachyderm
\nA true certainty
\nProbably as confident as it could ever be<\/p>\n
But the hedgehog it\u2019s small stature
\nAnd physiology head in good stead
\nThat apparently
\nAn underrated killer of serpents of the ground
\nDispatched together with venom
\nWhich never ever found
\nIt\u2019s toxic worth inside the hogs
\nEach biochemical dram
\nSaw off the vicious vipers
\nThat received the hedgehog slam<\/p>\n
In my alpine garden
\nMrs hog appears
\nShe loves my wooded forestry
\nThe leafy glades she clears
\nWildness it is opportune
\nBrambles hollies oaks
\nHazels everywhere
\nI leave her out her water
\nClearly she\u2019s aware
\nSlugs and caterpillars
\nBeatles and their larvae
\nThese tiny waking laboratories
\nShe just loves to share<\/p>\n
All of natures crawlies
\nInsects are her thing
\nShe\u2019s partial to slow worms
\nHer wandering doth bring
\nNature back to the garden
\nEach tireless hunting spree
\nConsists of rabid insect gorging
\nAnd not occasionally
\nSlow worms in the dry stone walls
\nFrogs and newts here too
\nMany birds share songs with us
\nAnd the mountains view
\nHalf way up a country path
\nA track of wildness grows
\nAnd my home is atop this hill
\nWhere a poet write his prose
\nA fox comes by in the morning
\nHis crepuscular embrace
\nThe corvidae are evident
\nAll over the place
\nHedges wild flowers meadows
\nSlate and stones paths
\nWhere
\nThe fireweed and the dandelion
