We hear them often in the evenings
\nCooing and we know
\nThat what we hear are clearly pigeons
\nMost of us we know
\nin cities they find ledges
\nOn roofs and windows, they
\nAre often attacked with netting and nails
\nTo block their way<\/p>\n
Rats with wings some call them
\nThese truly beautiful souls
\nVery very intelligent
\nThey know their various roles
\nLong ago were domesticated
\nThe Rock Dove they were called
\nTruly wonderful creatures
\nCollaboratively schooled<\/p>\n
They are amazing actually
\nHoming their quality
\nWherever they find themselves
\nWhat they do and sensationally
\nIs monitor their position
\nAnd using the sun and the sky
\nAnd actually their compass
\nTo return home which they apply<\/p>\n
The pull of the earth
\nA sniff of the air
\nAnd they are on their way
\nThey have binocular vision
\nTheir visual field at play
\nA layout of the journey
\nAn acoustic map they use
\nTruly fantastic feathers
\nFor them fantastic news<\/p>\n
Seventy to eight kilometres per hour
\nWith a strong tail wind
\nEven faster still
\nThats more sprightly than a Cheetah
\nAll the way it will
\nManage without stopping
\nOr veering off to rest
\nUsed in war time spectacularly
\nThey managed every test.<\/p>\n
Two pigeons are in the Smithsonian
\nWith medals they had won
\nThe Grand British Dicken Medal
\nWhat their bravery had done
\nAnd that was during wartime
\nTheir courage to the fore
\nTaking on the buzz bombs and the bullets
