{"id":71263,"date":"2026-04-14T08:08:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T08:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/?p=71263"},"modified":"2026-04-14T09:12:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T09:12:14","slug":"i-stayed-a-while","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/2026\/04\/i-stayed-a-while\/","title":{"rendered":"I stayed a while"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I met a hound<br \/>\nA character<br \/>\nWilbur was his given name<br \/>\nA haughty bark<br \/>\nWho made his mark<br \/>\nIn the countryside<br \/>\nHe staked his claim<br \/>\nDiminutive<br \/>\nYet boisterous,  he<br \/>\nLived with Robert<br \/>\nOldham who<br \/>\nLived in little Heath<br \/>\nA great address<br \/>\nWhere badgers and foxes<br \/>\nNever wanted for less<\/p>\n<p>Hollies and hazels<br \/>\nAnd oaks and pine<br \/>\nBlue bell clusters<br \/>\nThat smelled divine<br \/>\nIn a hearty home<br \/>\nOnce a dairy<br \/>\nPartly<br \/>\nWhere cows did graze<br \/>\nAnd their milk<br \/>\nWas heartily<\/p>\n<p>Given as freely<br \/>\nTo those who came<br \/>\nTo  the little dairy<br \/>\nWhose claim to fame<br \/>\nThe house was built<br \/>\nA while ago<br \/>\nWhen the fire of London<br \/>\nIt did glow<br \/>\nAwake to the many cries of grief<br \/>\nA hundred thousands homes<br \/>\nBelief<br \/>\nin wooden structures<br \/>\nClose together they<br \/>\nAt Pudding lane<br \/>\nDid burn they say<\/p>\n<p>This amazing house<br \/>\nIt\u2019s seclusion, where<br \/>\nPotten End and it\u2019s wild<br \/>\nNess share<br \/>\nWith squirrels and  owls<br \/>\nAnd muntjacs who<br \/>\nDeem to display<br \/>\nTheir magic too<\/p>\n<p>I stayed a while<br \/>\nIn a dreamy state<br \/>\nIn a topper-most room<br \/>\nWhere a roof of slate<br \/>\nHarboured a warmth<br \/>\nExpressing control<br \/>\nGiving warmth  to a lonely soul<br \/>\nUp and down it was battery driven<br \/>\nA seat that helped my legs to drive<br \/>\nSerenity and such historic values<br \/>\nReally helped me to survive<\/p>\n<p>Claudia a life long friend<br \/>\nMade the acquaintance bountifully<br \/>\nPrepared my room with her gentle ease<br \/>\nArranged it all which did nobly please<br \/>\nThe aged poet bent on rhyme<br \/>\nAnd enjoying the heritage born in time<br \/>\nA house of character gently so<br \/>\nA wooded copse with a heavenly glow<br \/>\nProsaic peacefulness pandering to<br \/>\nThe solitary gentleman owner who<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks there a holiday<br \/>\nEncapsulated one might say<br \/>\nIn regent splendour atop was I<br \/>\nBeautiful beams and walls to sigh<br \/>\nTo dream to create my story lines<br \/>\nTo sit in the sun and it certainly shines<br \/>\nWhere the song birds feed<br \/>\nAnd heraldically<br \/>\nSoften the hearts of the<br \/>\nPoetry<\/p>\n<p>That flies and flies<br \/>\nAll around the place<br \/>\nRob Oldham\u2019s manner<br \/>\nEach wild embrace<br \/>\nWilbur his dog a gentle soul<br \/>\nExcited to see us<br \/>\nKnowing his role<br \/>\nA companion animal<br \/>\nWatching o\u2019re<br \/>\nHis gentle master<br \/>\nWho he did adore <\/p>\n<p>Out across the bathroom scene<br \/>\nWild repose and verdant green<br \/>\nHomely, magical peaceful sights<br \/>\nMisty mornings soulful nights<br \/>\nSerenity a dormant swell<br \/>\nIt\u2019s all surrounding I hear tell<br \/>\nThe history each  darkly hour<br \/>\nOf consciousness<br \/>\nAnd  gentle power<br \/>\nSpent there bringing wildness and<br \/>\nA marvellous magic across the land<\/p>\n<p>Back home in my mountainous place<br \/>\nFar away am I this day<br \/>\nThoughts though of the dreamy seclusion<br \/>\nThe old houses charm<br \/>\nAnd wild profusion<br \/>\nThe ancient wildness that surrounds<br \/>\nMildly mystic<br \/>\nAnd it\u2019s grounds<br \/>\nBeautifully peaceful<br \/>\nEveryday<br \/>\nHearing the owls<br \/>\nNever far away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I met a hound A character Wilbur was his given name A haughty bark Who made his mark In the countryside He staked his claim Diminutive Yet boisterous, he Lived with Robert Oldham who Lived in little Heath A great &hellip;
