This marvellous yew
\nMajestically
\nStands upon a mound
\nAt the junction of Castle street
\nAnd the High street
\nOn a chalky ground<\/p>\n
It may have been
\nPlanted,
\nso I gather
\nAround the death of one
\nJohn Moore who died in 1673
\nWhen said and done<\/p>\n
Yews grew well in churchyards
\nWhich is often why
\nThey were planted close to the actual church
\nWhere the dead might lie
\nYews magical profusion
\nTheir toxicity
\nHeartwood red
\nAnd sapwood white
\nObligatory <\/p>\n
their gaseous interjection
\nAs sanctification seemed
\nTo where folk might be laid to rest
\nIdeality redeemed
\nWith a girth of twelve feet six this day
\nTheir branches would have been
\nIdeal for the perfect bow
\nFashioned from the evergreen<\/p>\n
Beautiful of foliage
\nWith berries of blood red
\nSymbolically in Celtic times
\nOf indeed the dead
\nShakespeare spoke of the needles
\nOf \u201cslips of yew
\nsilvered in the moons eclipse\u201d
\nYew shoots buried with corpses
\nLongevity
\nand regeneration
\nAs boughs bend so they sprout anew
\nRejuvenate recreate life itself
