From the ancient gods
\nI flourish
\nMy truth and exactitude
\nFactual and ungarbled
\nAnd was always viewed
\nAs communicating colour
\nAnd a heady trail of scent
\nA real reliability
\nMy sincerity was spent<\/p>\n
Soaking up the sun
\nMy planet so to say
\nMy gender it was Masculine
\nand fire, along the way
\nMy deities were Eos
\nAnd Astoreth my power
\nFrom a ancient Semitic goddess
\nOne of fertility and our
\nStigma threads are collected
\nAnd dried and favoured for
\nA seasoning and a colouring
\nThat the finest do adore<\/p>\n
Many many moons ago
\nA crocus loved a Nymph he knew
\nShe lived near Athens
\nHer name was \u201cSmilax\u201d
\nIt\u2019s said she was, sweet on him too
\nIt was infatuation
\napparently and she
\nWent off of him she just got bored
\nBut for him expressly
\nHe loved her really badly
\nHe couldn\u2019t let her go
\nAnd in his melancholia
\nHis sadness it did show<\/p>\n
The gods were clearly
\nUpset of his unrequited love
\nAnd turned him into a beautiful flower
\nFrom heaven up above
\nFor her she became the bindweed
\nThe thorny aggravation
\nIndicative that Crocus
\nHad been rejected, his salvation
\nPrimarily a source of beauty
\nAn Aroma of the gods
\nFor her the puny bindweed
\nLeft to rot in clods<\/p>\n
That was the ancient story
\nAnd there are others I know
\nBut the strange thing is
\nThat bindweed over centuries
\nDid glow
\nWith pretty bells of pink and white
\nAnd though are often thrown
\nHe became the saffron Crocus
\nAs most of you have known<\/p>\n
The stigmas became the saffron
\nDried and essentially pure
\nPositive and assertive
\nand have become a lure
\nFor gourmets really everywhere
\nAnd for magicians too
\nWho realise that psychic powers
\nAre generated through
\nThe blush the flush the hectic glow
\nThe consciousness the sense
\nThe most persuasive perfume
\nIt\u2019s profiling as dense
\nAs any and it\u2019s vigour
\nAnd it\u2019s curiosity
\nResplendentLy attired in light
\nAnd reciprocity<\/p>\n
It\u2019s often used in healing spells
\nAnd has a ritual role
\nIt\u2019s does dispel great sadness
\nAnd thus it charms the soul
\nLizards are put off by it
\nThe smell it makes them sick
\nAnd so they stay away
\nIt just gets on their wick<\/p>\n
It\u2019s probably now the most expensive
\nHerb in all the world
\nDelicately balanced
\nAnd many chefs have hurled
\nPinches into dishes
\nAnd smelled the glorious scent
\nThat\u2019s wafts into their noses
\nAnd just makes them content<\/p>\n
Drinking saffron water
\nIt\u2019s said gives you the sight
\nOf what the present future holds
\nThe cerebration light
\nSuch sensory perception
\nMust be a souls delight
\nCleopatra swore by it
\nHer bath water it sang
\nWith all the joys of heavenly gods
\nAnd the ardour from the tang<\/p>\n
In India with Sandalwood
\nIt cools the aching brow
\nEngrossed in it the Poet
\nIs mindful as to how
\nThe many words are searched for
\nAnd found painstakingly
\nAlert and watchful to the sense
\nAnd credibility<\/p>\n
The fact is Crocus Has become
\nQuite the tortured soul
\nPulled about by many hands
\nAlL out of his control
\nThe stigma\u2019s ripped away from him
\nThe reasoning unsure
\nLaterally still curious
\nWhy more and more and more<\/p>\n
Are seemingly now growing
\nAlmost everywhere
\nAs is of course the Bindweed
\nThat Gardeners\u2019 do share
\nTheir anger and bewilderment
\nWith why smilax still should be
\nAlways climbing up their favourite
