{"id":47810,"date":"2020-09-19T09:15:21","date_gmt":"2020-09-19T09:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/?p=47810"},"modified":"2020-09-19T19:53:52","modified_gmt":"2020-09-19T19:53:52","slug":"saffron-crocus-sativa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/2020\/09\/saffron-crocus-sativa\/","title":{"rendered":"SAFFRON (Crocus Sativa)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the ancient gods<br \/>\nI flourish<br \/>\nMy truth and exactitude<br \/>\nFactual and ungarbled<br \/>\nAnd was always viewed<br \/>\nAs communicating colour<br \/>\nAnd a heady trail of scent<br \/>\nA real reliability<br \/>\nMy sincerity was spent<\/p>\n<p>Soaking up the sun<br \/>\nMy planet so to say<br \/>\nMy gender it was Masculine<br \/>\nand fire, along the way<br \/>\nMy deities were Eos<br \/>\nAnd Astoreth my power<br \/>\nFrom a ancient Semitic goddess<br \/>\nOne of fertility and our<br \/>\nStigma threads are collected<br \/>\nAnd dried and favoured for<br \/>\nA seasoning and a colouring<br \/>\nThat the finest do adore<\/p>\n<p>Many many moons ago<br \/>\nA crocus loved a Nymph he knew<br \/>\nShe lived near Athens<br \/>\nHer name was \u201cSmilax\u201d<br \/>\nIt\u2019s said she was, sweet on him too<br \/>\nIt was infatuation<br \/>\napparently and she<br \/>\nWent off of him she just got bored<br \/>\nBut for him expressly<br \/>\nHe loved her really badly<br \/>\nHe couldn\u2019t let her go<br \/>\nAnd in his melancholia<br \/>\nHis sadness it did show<\/p>\n<p>The gods were clearly<br \/>\nUpset of his unrequited love<br \/>\nAnd turned him into a beautiful flower<br \/>\nFrom heaven up above<br \/>\nFor her she became the bindweed<br \/>\nThe thorny aggravation<br \/>\nIndicative that Crocus<br \/>\nHad been rejected, his salvation<br \/>\nPrimarily a source of beauty<br \/>\nAn Aroma of the gods<br \/>\nFor her the puny bindweed<br \/>\nLeft to rot in clods<\/p>\n<p>That was the ancient story<br \/>\nAnd there are others I know<br \/>\nBut the strange thing is<br \/>\nThat  bindweed over centuries<br \/>\nDid glow<br \/>\nWith pretty bells of pink and white<br \/>\nAnd though are often thrown<br \/>\nHe became the saffron Crocus<br \/>\nAs most of you have known<\/p>\n<p>The stigmas became  the saffron<br \/>\nDried and essentially pure<br \/>\nPositive and assertive<br \/>\nand have become a lure<br \/>\nFor gourmets really everywhere<br \/>\nAnd for magicians too<br \/>\nWho realise that psychic powers<br \/>\nAre generated through<br \/>\nThe blush the flush the hectic glow<br \/>\nThe consciousness the sense<br \/>\nThe most persuasive perfume<br \/>\nIt\u2019s profiling as dense<br \/>\nAs any and it\u2019s vigour<br \/>\nAnd it\u2019s curiosity<br \/>\nResplendentLy attired in light<br \/>\nAnd reciprocity<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s often used in healing spells<br \/>\nAnd has a ritual role<br \/>\nIt\u2019s does dispel great sadness<br \/>\nAnd thus it charms the soul<br \/>\nLizards are put off by it<br \/>\nThe smell it makes them sick<br \/>\nAnd so they stay away<br \/>\nIt just gets on their wick<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably now the most expensive<br \/>\nHerb in all the world<br \/>\nDelicately balanced<br \/>\nAnd many chefs have hurled<br \/>\nPinches  into dishes<br \/>\nAnd smelled the glorious scent<br \/>\nThat\u2019s wafts into their noses<br \/>\nAnd just makes them content<\/p>\n<p>Drinking saffron water<br \/>\nIt\u2019s said gives you the sight<br \/>\nOf what the present future holds<br \/>\nThe cerebration light<br \/>\nSuch sensory perception<br \/>\nMust be a souls delight<br \/>\nCleopatra swore by it<br \/>\nHer bath water it sang<br \/>\nWith all the joys of heavenly gods<br \/>\nAnd the ardour from the tang<\/p>\n<p>In India with Sandalwood<br \/>\nIt cools the aching brow<br \/>\nEngrossed in it the Poet<br \/>\nIs mindful as to how<br \/>\nThe many words are searched for<br \/>\nAnd found painstakingly<br \/>\nAlert and watchful to the sense<br \/>\nAnd credibility<\/p>\n<p>The fact is Crocus Has become<br \/>\nQuite the tortured soul<br \/>\nPulled about by many hands<br \/>\nAlL out of his control<br \/>\nThe stigma\u2019s ripped away from him<br \/>\nThe reasoning unsure<br \/>\nLaterally still curious<br \/>\nWhy more and more and more<\/p>\n<p>Are seemingly now growing<br \/>\nAlmost everywhere<br \/>\nAs is of course the Bindweed<br \/>\nThat Gardeners\u2019 do share<br \/>\nTheir anger and bewilderment<br \/>\nWith why smilax still  should be<br \/>\nAlways climbing up their favourite<br \/>\nPlants or sapling tree.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the ancient gods I flourish My truth and exactitude Factual and ungarbled And was always viewed As communicating colour And a heady trail of scent A real reliability My sincerity was spent Soaking up the sun My planet so &hellip;
