The first day of the new year
\nquietly comes to life
\nnot much wind to speak of
\nthe suns rays like a knife
\ncut into the morning
\nand golden light we see
\npicking out the weathered bark
\nof almost every tree
\na wood pigeon his collar
\nresplendent in the light
\npretty fat this fellow
\nhe really looks al’right
\nclearly there is food enough
\nand a lovely clear blue sky
\nsome wind now at low level
\ntrying to apply
\nsome movement in the garden plants
\nthat dance in front of me
\nthe grasses and the wilder ones
