\nOn four massive legs
\nIt\u2019s wrong to conflate
\nSize with true strength

\nWe inexcusably don\u2019t realise<\/p>\n
Chains around feet and legs
\nBurden us so
\nWith our weight
\nWe curtail
\nIt\u2019s unjust
\nAnd we know
\nIt isn\u2019t the done thing
\nBut many still do
\nChain up the elephants
\nWho suffer, who<\/p>\n
Do get frustrated
\nIt\u2019s discriminatory
\nIt favours mahouts
\nBut we shouldn\u2019t be
\nMaking it simpler for humans
\nWhat we
\nMust do
\nis to respect them
\nThat is my view<\/p>\n
Used now for rides
\nOn safari\u2019s
\nAnd Or festivals they
\nAre chained up the rest of the time
\nThe dismay
\nIs obvious really
\nTo those who do feel
\nBut It\u2019s clear many humans these days
\nAre not real<\/p>\n
If they had the weight
\nAnd the stress and the strain
\nWe wouldn\u2019t stop hearing
\nYes they would complain
\nBut the elephants suffer
\nThey hurt every day
\nThe chains rip the flesh
\nAnd the skin clean away<\/p>\n
We owe them a great deal
\nThey ought to have rights
\nTo enjoy some freedom
\nTo me at the heights
\nOf resentment what we
\nIs just make them work more
\nAs if it\u2019s obligatory<\/p>\n
In Nepal many elephants
\nSuffer a lot
\nWhen the chains are removed
\nThe squeals they are not
\nA few they are many
\nIt\u2019s obvious they
\nFeel so much joy at the end of the day<\/p>\n
WE shouldn\u2019t neglect them
\nAnd though they may not
\nKick up a fuss
\nThey may still have got
\nAn injury or an uncomfortable sore
\nCaused by chains rubbing
\nUntil they are raw<\/p>\n
Which can lead to infections
\nLameness and pain
\nMultiplied by their weight
\nImagine the strain
\nDisparaging comments
\nAnd sarcastic talk
\nDoes upset these animals
\nAnd when they walk<\/p>\n
Dressed in regalia
\nWith loud drums and moreIts really eats into their guts
\nAnd I am sure
\nThey soon feel unworthy
\nAnd even despised
\nWhen reality tells me
\nThey should all feel prized<\/p>\n
So to remove their chains
\nAnd let them forage free
\nIt\u2019s a blessing for them
\nIt\u2019s what they want to see
\nA seal of approval
\nA patronage they
\nSoak up the hours
\nAnd it makes their day<\/p>\n
But applying the chains
\nAnd if and when they see
\nSome bull hooks carried
\nSuch improbity
\nIt is insincerity
\nShameful disgrace
\nIt\u2019s not how you do it
\nNot in this place<\/p>\n
It is really spiteful
\nThat\u2019s if you ask me
\nI am disabled and pain
\nFollows me
\nIt tires and it weakens
\nAnd the suffering grows
\nAnd we soon become irritable

Mahouts have a way
\nThey seldom atone
\nAnd very often
\nYou do hear them moan
\nThey do swing the bull hook
\nAnd it cuts deep
\nReminding you hourly

\nAnd aches and pains
\nCome like a scythe and the
