By the side of a road
\nIn a green plastic sack
\nA dog lay prostrate
\nUnresponsive
\nHis back
\nIn so many ways
\nJust lying there
\nCovered in flies
\nIn the afternoon air<\/p>\n
He was just about breathing
\nAnd skinny as hell
\nClearly neglected
\nJust there where he\u2019d fell
\nHit by a car and just left to die
\nWho ever did this
\nYou have to ask why
\nthey would leave a poor animal
\nLying in pain
\nNot stop to check
\nPeople are insane<\/p>\n
He hadn\u2019t known love
\nAnd little care
\nHe was so skinny
\nAnd had been lying there
\nFor some time it seems
\nI expect feeling low
\nWhen nobody loves you
\nYou just wish to go
\nJust close your eyes
\nAnd drift off somewhere
\nSo today he was found
\nAnd we became aware<\/p>\n
Prostration and gloom
\nIt\u2019s a burden for sure
\nIt\u2019s easy to lay here
\nFlat out on the floor
\nHoping perhaps to drift far away
\nTo a place where the pain
\nAnd the stress goes away<\/p>\n
We collected him
\nAnd took him to the veterinary
\nWho checked him all over
\nHe was weak we could see
\ncleaned out his mouth and his ears
\nAnd his pain
\nAnd fed him and loved him
\nAgain and again<\/p>\n
Gave him water and food
\nAnd tried hard to cheer
\nTo improve his spirits
\nAnd reduce his fear
\nBeing injured and left
\nDoes things to your head
\nAnd truly he may have
\nBeen better off dead<\/p>\n
Still we found him and helped him
\nAnd loved him a while
\nWalked him on the grass
\nHe had some style
\nBut was clearly weak
\nAnd very forlorn
\nWishing in some ways
\nHe had never been born<\/p>\n
With trauma comes sadness
\nThe doldrums can be
\nTesting for everyone
\nThat much we see
\nBeing down in the dumps
\nGiving up easily
\nIn one\u2019s heart of hearts
\nWe all might agree<\/p>\n
But with care and attention
\nFor everyday
\nLove and affection
\nHealing they say
\nDoes and can work
\nMiracles so
\nWith time he felt better
\nAnd wanted to know<\/p>\n
Wanted to walk a bit
\nWanted to see
\nTo breathe the fresh air
\nAnd come close to me
\nAnd others who helped him
\nAnd know we hope we
\nCan find a forever home
