Animals, do make me cry
\ntheir honesty, is really why
\nthey love us
\nunconditionally
\nit really is no mystery
\nCupboard love we call it
\nidentifying traits
\nfrom humans when in point of fact
\nthey have plates and plates
\nof love, real love,
\ntrue and honest love
\ngiven freely, they
\nwe often don’t deserve it
\nbut they give it anyway
\nthey really do not care a sod
\nif we’re rich or poor
\nwhether we are dressed to kill
\nor live outside the law
\nanimals, they make me cry
\nthey love us even when
\nwe punish them and hurt them
\nI mean the hunter men
\nout there in the darkness
\nhiding with their guns
\nthe crossbows and their nasty hearts
\neven with their sons
\nready,so to slaughter
\nbut those animals do trust
\nthey may sense humans near them
\nbut they do not know disgust
\nits only love that’s in their heart
\nimagining, we care
\nand its not until that vilest twang
\nand that arrows in the air
\nthat they realise the outcome
\nis ghastly, and they know
\nthe human has just let them down
