They found him by the roadside
\nWounded and bleeding he
\nJust looking at his injuries
\nI cried how can they be
\nSo very very terrible
\nWho allowed so much neglect
\nScalded him with boiling water
\nAnd the street dirt did infect<\/p>\n
A huge patch on his scalded skin
\nWrithing from so many flies
\nFeasting on his scalded flesh
\nScant respect that\u2019s about the size
\nOf this gross irreverence
\nThis humiliation here
\nThe agony this donkey must be feeling
\nIt\u2019s so clear<\/p>\n
A wave of flies a minor fog
\nThe maggots gorging hard
\nHis feet and legs were injured too
\nIt\u2019s difficult for a bard
\nTo watch and write a poem
\nOf the horror that one sees
\nRajasthan the hospital
\nWhere everyone agrees<\/p>\n
This sanctuary is special
\nAnimals aid unlimited
\nStreet angels working night and day
\nEveryone so spirited
\nTo help all of the animals
\nSuffering so much
\nStranded and forsaken
\nWithout even a crutch<\/p>\n
Nobody to help him
\nPoor BIRJU suffered so
\nHope was fast stagnating
\nEveryday a low
\nAnd really very difficult to lift
\nHimself and try
\nTo be steady and use calmness
\nWhen he thought he soon would die<\/p>\n
By day 30 cleansed and bandaged
\nEvery single day
\nAntibiotic powder and antiseptic spray
\nLove and patting cuddling
\nTalking quietly to
\nBIRJU talking tenderly
\nConfidence building true<\/p>\n
He still had problems walking
\nHis hind legs wounded bad
\nHis gait was awfully painful
\nHe was extra sad
\nWatching him progress slowly
\nFeeling the pain each day
\nSuffering really suffering
\nThough he began to bray<\/p>\n
Quietly at first but did it
\nAroused And feeling good
\nDay 150 imagine this
\nDoing what he should
\nEbullient and effervescent
\nRolling on the floor
\nStill bleeding from an open wound
\nBut much better than before<\/p>\n
Looking at his progress
\nOne can remember he
\nBroke our hearts when he came in
\nHis martyrdom could be
\nWorse than any animals perhaps
\nWe had ever seen
\nAnd how he managed to stand there
\nSo very painfully lean<\/p>\n
Indisposed and aching
\nTormented by it all
\nEvery single day new dressings
\nTrying to overhaul
\nThe infections and the damage
\nOf all those maggots who
\nBasically ate so much away
\nAs hungry maggots do<\/p>\n
And now he still is wounded
\nIt\u2019s healing by the day
\nStill he is being bandaged
\nUp but has begun to play
\nThere are other donkeys a calf
\nSome sheep all friends
\nAnd the love he gets from everyone
\nTruthfully it sends<\/p>\n
The life force around his body
\nHope clearly we feel
\nHis spirit warm and happy
\nHe is the proper deal
\nHe adores all the affection
\nThat is given so freely and
\nResponds with true improvements
\nTo every caring hand<\/p>\n
His courage was remarkable
\nThe working animals they
\nBear the brunt of anger
\nOf indiscretion along the way
\nSo vulnerable and wantIng
\nOf aid over the woe
\nStill overwhelmingly beautiful
