A time of darkness rules the Volga river
\nPlaces where
\nMari people close to land and forest
\nTried to share
\nA closeness to the landscape
\nAnimists were they
\nBelieving there were spirits
\nIn their environment the way
\nWas open for the static ones
\nThe rocks the wind the trees
\nThe untamed power of Nature
\nThe inanimate that seize
\nThe spirit of the people
\nAnd devide it up and show
\nTheir pilgrimage to sacred groves
\nWhere secrets there did grow
\nThe meadow and the mountain mari
\nSpecialist in thought
\nClad in their canonincals
\nThe cheremis were sought
\nRituals protected and established
\nA desire
\nFor a great coming together
\nIn their specialist attire
\nSacrifices had earlier
\nHappened but gradually
\nAnimals were saved the slaughtering
\nAnd it feels to me
\nCakes shaped into animals
\nWere left behind instead
\nOtherworldly fiction
\nThat urgently they lead
\nAlchemy apparently
\nTheir enchantment let us say
\nTheir honest veneration
\nWas getting underway<\/p>\n
Behold the VOLGa River
\nA great force in those times
\nThe winds that blew their damndest
\nSpiralling that climes
\nInto a force of utmost power
\nA mysticism where
\nA great coming together
\nOf those much more aware
\nA brotherhood a family
\nOf greatness to behold
\nRelieved that the inanimate
\nHad spirits And the old
\nFaiths were clearly present
\nAn apathy of soughts
\nCloser to the land
\nThey understand the power of thoughts
\nIts not that they were godless
\nThey believed and they could feel
\nMuch more in touch with Nature
\nAnd all it did reveal
\nIn groves of light and darkness
\nWhere their consciousness could flow
\nAnd spread into a language
\nThat gradually would grow
\nThe violent dead were many
\nKeremets half ghosts
\nAnd sacrifices made to them
\nBy the various hosts
\nButchering the horses
\nThough went against their will
\nTook them to a place infact
\nWhere too much blood did spill
\nThe great wave of christianity
\nRolled in quite the surprise
\nConversion of the many
\nMore than some realise
\nBut still there were remaining
\nThe Mari who still
\nConduct themselves in their secret world
\nWith the ultimate of skill<\/p>\n
The magick and the purity
\nIts really underground
\nAnchored in austerity
\nFrom the poverty around
\nSelf mortifying constancy
\nTemperate lets say
\nA frugality of purpose
\nWhere Purgation paved the way
\nThey had their own integrity
\nThey had their scrupulosity
\nObligated in many ways
\nDutiful to each others praise
\nBound in a simplicity
\nEngaged in a legality
\nAppropriate in so many ways
\nClose to the earth
\nHidebound to raise
\nWere they pagans
\nWe are not sure
\nThe Euopeans knew what for
\nRaising consciousness perhaps
\nA uralic language without gaps
\nCyrillic script
\nBound on respect
\nChampions I do detect
\nIn their own space
\nIn their own time
\nSeers and prophets
\nSpeak the rhyme
\nDeliverance in many ways
\nTalismanic symbols raise
\nThe spirit the coming together
