There was something about him
\nApart from his great stature
\nHe took it on himself to be the one
\nThe guru and the mentor
\nFor a number of the other males
\nHe possessed a status
\nThat was second to none<\/p>\n
Huge great tusks
\nA great head on his shoulders
\nCushioned feet and gentle in a way
\nIn the great spirit of Africa
\nThe Zambezi valley
\nWhere elephants and men
\nShare much lets say<\/p>\n
Fear and mistrust
\nWere the honest negatives
\nBut not so “big boy”
\nHe appeared to be
\nAbly tasked with honour
\nAnd commitment
\nTo what he saw as
\nHis great mystery<\/p>\n
He had a noble manner
\nA calming attitude
\nHe inluenced the others
\nAnd by us he was viewed
\nAs somewhat of a leader
\nThough the matriarch was there
\nBut he was very friendly
\nAnd his aura he did share<\/p>\n
His eyes were so expressive
\nYou could almost feel his heart
\nHis mood his consternation
\nAwesome from the start
\nAnd all of us could feel it
\nIt was a remarkable skill
\nHe was able to communicate
\nAnd though very big
\nLife was still<\/p>\n
When “big boy”was around us
\nHe was like one of the crowd
\nBecause basically he came each day
\nHis miracles he showered
\nOver us and we felt them
\nHe got to us and we
\nLoved him as a special friend
\nAnd we admiringly<\/p>\n
Went about our business
\nThe place was purest peace
\nSerenity it was heavenly
\nYou could just release
\nThe woes as such of city life
\nAnd realise that there
\nIs beauty in the wildness
\nIf everyone can share<\/p>\n
Watching the schooling process
\nThe teaching of respect
\nThe bachelor groups were learning
\nThey love they play they elect
\nTheir teachers and their best of friends
\nAnd everyday they learn
\nTo love to play to fight to grieve
\nAnd to show concern<\/p>\n
Mostly men keep their distance
\nEach frightened of one another
\nElephants have their ivory tusks
\nAnd they eat a lot the other
\nProblem is they only manage
\nTo digest 40 per cent
\nAnd so they are always eating
\nAnd that is their intent<\/p>\n
Anyway so villagers grow crops
\nFor themselves to eat
\nAnd elephants will come at night
\nAnd rapidly delete
\nThe grain stores with their hunger
\nAnd thus disputes occur
\nAnd with poachers in the vicinity
\nAnger it can stir<\/p>\n
Along the great Zambesi
\nLife’s abundance shines
\nStillness and the natural order
\nPrevail along the lines
\nOf Nature and the equilibrium
\nThat one soon can see
\nEach species does its own thing
\nThey are constant and just free<\/p>\n
Man really is the problem
\nHe hasnt learned to share
\nAnd doesnt really retain the respect
\nFor animals already there
\nAll going about their business
\nLife and death and more
\nThe union of naturalness
\nAnd the great green law<\/p>\n
In November when the rains come
\nThe Poachers they come too
\nA single bullet can end a life
\nThat statement so true
\nAnd in 1996 we lost our wondrous friend
\nGunned down by the piaching scum
\nAnd the ripples that did send<\/p>\n
Through us all for “big boy”
\nIt Broke our heart to know
\nThis phenomenon we would never see again
\nAnd Its still a blow
\nThinking sbout him, wondering
\nHow his aura will permeate the jungle
\nAnd we feel him with us still<\/p>\n
It was then that we decided
\nTo create a team where we
\nWould protect all of the animals
\nA kind of sanctuary
\nHe had been a great bridge builder
\nWith a bounden duty to
\nGive us his allegiances
\nWhich actually Rang true<\/p>\n
And so really in his honour
\nthe CLZ became
\nA force to be reckoned with
\nHis legacy our claim
\nThroughout the year
\nWe would be there
\nTo maintain the secret world
\nIn which the tribes of AFRICA
\nAnd all of us were hurled<\/p>\n
The wheels of life
\nThe old the young
\nLifes exhuberance
\nIt Had rung
\nthe bells of sweet eternity
\nThe distant rumbles certainly
\nEverything is intertwined
\nAnd interdependent
\nAnd we find<\/p>\n
We are honour bound
\nTo see it through
\nTo recall our friend
\n“Big boy” he did woo
\nUs all into his field of grace
\nAnd each Bull we see
\nWe make out HIS face<\/p>\n
Untarnished unsullied
\nA chivalrous knight
\nWho captured souls
\nBut the poachers spite
\nEnded his reign
\nOn this mortal coil
\nFor his ivory tusks
\nBrought us all turmoil<\/p>\n
But his wondrous stature
\nIs in our mind
\nWhere The single bullet
\nWill never find
\nA place our thoughts
\nWill always be
\nOf “big boy”
