I be the hedgerow rover
\nA spiny fellow who
\nFrequents the thorny
\nHazels and the berried holly too
\nI am pretty slow at running
\nDreaming is my thing
\nNocturnally I get about
\nTo the countryside I bring<\/p>\n
A ball of spines occasionally
\nWhen I do my thing
\nWhen I get a bit frightened
\nThat is when I bring
\nMy lifelessness and languor
\nMy immobility
\nI’m suspended in abeyance
\nIts my kind of dormancy<\/p>\n
My enemy the Badger
\nHis storminess for me
\nHe can get real tyrannical
\nLike an incendiary
\nWe go for similar food we do
\nAnd I best let him be
\nFor me and him just dont exist
\nIn the same place thankfully<\/p>\n
On the beady eyes we worry
\nThe owls can sometimes be
\nUp there on a bough somewhere
\nAn overhanging tree
\nAnd that can cause us stress of course
\nFor when they swoop and fly
\nIts done in total silence
\nWhich is clearly why<\/p>\n
We have to have our wits about us
\nWhen we are out at night
\nLooking for sufficient cover
\nWhen the slayers are in sight
\nInsects protein rich
\nSnails and frogs and toads
\nAnd birds eggs we can pitch
\nIn
\nbut try to keep off the roads
\nNot forgetting Berries too
\nSo we are quite omniverous
\nIn what we all now do<\/p>\n
Some of us like hibernating
\nWhen the weathers cold
\nIts good to get into a den
\nOn sleeping we are sold
\nWe drop our temperature down a bit
\nAnd demonstrate our way
\nOf feeling rather comfortable
\nAnd younger even every day<\/p>\n
We like the taste of fatty foods
\nInsects can be great
\nBut our livers can get fatty
\nSo we have to contemplate
\nMore grassy roots and mushrooms
\nFor cancer is a thing
\nThat can really creep up on us
\nAnd actually do us in<\/p>\n
We are prone to obesity
\nFat and sugar we
\nDont move about that much
\nAnd like to eat too much you see
\nIts not just human beings
\nIts hedgehogs too alas
\nWe also get run over
\nAnd do run out of gas<\/p>\n
And we are inquisitive
\nSo discarded tubes and pipes
\nWe like to get our heads stuck in them
\nThen we get the gripes
\nAnd we can pass ringworm
\nOnto humans who
\nDont much like that problem
\nWhich we know is true<\/p>\n
As to reproduction
\nWe are born blind and we
\nCan have as many as 6 babies
\nSo a mother has to be
\nGood with kids and on the ball
\nThe quills soon dry and we
\nJust have to really learn the ropes
\nRe predation, constantly<\/p>\n
The Romani’s still eat us
\nSo that can be a pain
\nBoiled or roasted
\nReally that idea is insane
\nIn other places far away
\nThey make medicine out of us
\nAnd Mrs Tiggy Winkle was a hedgehog
\nSo the fuss<\/p>\n
Really about hedgehogs
\nIs that we are hushed and calm
\nWe kind of grunt or snuffle
\nOtherwise we come to harm
\nIn The murkiness and twilight
\nAt sunset often we
\nSnuckle down in silence
\nIn the litter by a tree<\/p>\n
Concealed in shadowy mystery
\nUnnoticed by you
\nWe disappear we hideaway
\nLie low yes we do
\nWe mosey around and dip into
\nAnd Eavesdrop when we can
\nWe are sensitive and thoughtful
\nAnd live to a kind of plan<\/p>\n
We can live up to seven years
\nWhich in hedgehog speak is great
\nDiet plays a big part
\nIn longevity and fate
\nStaying away from BROCK
\nAnd FOXES clearly helps us be
\nMore sage like in our thinking
