{"id":40413,"date":"2019-03-10T17:45:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-10T17:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/?p=40413"},"modified":"2019-03-10T18:22:06","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T18:22:06","slug":"the-oak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/2019\/03\/the-oak\/","title":{"rendered":"The Oak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All of them are silent friends<br \/>\nIn unchallenged supremacy<br \/>\nStands the oak<br \/>\nIts massive strength<br \/>\nIts grandeur<br \/>\nThe tree of life for me<\/p>\n<p>An Oak<br \/>\nA lover of the eternal light<br \/>\nA great force to be reckoned with<br \/>\nBehold the druids right<\/p>\n<p>To perform their rites<br \/>\nTheir sanctuary<br \/>\nBeneath tbeir sacred shade<br \/>\nWith sessile leaves<br \/>\nYes stalkless<br \/>\nOn peduncles are laid<\/p>\n<p>Acorns individual stalks<br \/>\nBut then again we see<br \/>\nLeaves on stalks<br \/>\nAnd acorns not<br \/>\nThe other type of tree<\/p>\n<p>Both oaks both strapping<br \/>\nSolid woods<br \/>\nQUercus rich fed green to brown<br \/>\nHanging on through winters bite<br \/>\nUntil the next Spring<br \/>\nCurled and rustic<br \/>\nDisplaces them with its new light<\/p>\n<p>Pendulous catkins complete with scales<br \/>\nTransforms into the cup<br \/>\nWe see<br \/>\nHolding the acorn in its grasp<br \/>\nThe flowers appear in April<br \/>\nSimultaneously<\/p>\n<p>By October it be ripe and good<br \/>\nAs moisture then transcends<br \/>\nAnd taking flight from wind<br \/>\nIt flies<br \/>\nIts flightful journey sends<\/p>\n<p>The nut the future groves<br \/>\nHurled near and far<br \/>\nThe gardeners of nature<br \/>\nThe wild souls who will star<\/p>\n<p>By taking them and throwing them<br \/>\nOr burying them at ease<br \/>\nOr the schoolboy who may<br \/>\nCarry them away<br \/>\nAnd drop them,  trees<\/p>\n<p>Flourish being carried<br \/>\nTo other places<br \/>\nWhere<br \/>\nFate may bring them luck<br \/>\nMay wing them<br \/>\nFlying through the air<\/p>\n<p>Faeries use the acorn cups<br \/>\nAs goblets for the dew<br \/>\nThe wine upon the faery feast<br \/>\nWith senses good and true<br \/>\nThe forests swine suggests<br \/>\nA bitter treat for one and all<br \/>\nTis said the flesh may suffer<br \/>\nBut as a vegan i can call<\/p>\n<p>Not on the flesh of animals<br \/>\nNeither dead or lost<br \/>\nPreferring to enjoy their lives<br \/>\nWhatever be that cost<br \/>\nAnd now we know how many creatures<br \/>\nFrequenting the bold tree<br \/>\nCreating galls and apples<br \/>\nAnd spangles earnestly<\/p>\n<p>Nuts and berries the mistletoe<br \/>\nThe cause of all of these<br \/>\nDiverted  sap a rising<br \/>\nA chaotic light filled tease<br \/>\nInsects come to lay their eggs<br \/>\nAnd they will fly away<br \/>\nThe apples and the oak galls formed<br \/>\nA multincoloured sway<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a thousand insects<br \/>\nAre supported by the tree<br \/>\nThe cockchafer is one of them<br \/>\nAnd varietal moths they be<br \/>\nPerhaps the Purple Emperor<br \/>\nA butterfly supreme<br \/>\nPretty rare these days alas<br \/>\nShades of red and cream<\/p>\n<p>May bugs once were common<br \/>\nBut mists of ugly spray<br \/>\nScarabs once from ancient times<br \/>\nAnd the purple emperor they<br \/>\nSeemingly were faeries<br \/>\nAs subtle as could be<br \/>\nThat also liked the willow scrub<br \/>\nAnd the minerals for free<\/p>\n<p>The roots delve ever deeper<br \/>\nInto the underworld<br \/>\nThe tree of Thor<br \/>\nWhat is the door<br \/>\nTo the kingdom Where is hurled<br \/>\nGalatian tribes held councils<br \/>\nOak milk caps too are found<br \/>\nIn the great oaks shadow<br \/>\nIn the underground<\/p>\n<p>Myccorrhizals gifted beings<br \/>\nProviding nutrients rich<br \/>\nIncrease water intake<br \/>\nAnd dutifully pitch<br \/>\nDefence against bacteria<br \/>\nAnd alien fungi who<br \/>\nMay come to cause the great oak damage<br \/>\nAs some are prone to do,<\/p>\n<p>Like the armillaria whose honey fronds<br \/>\nMay be<br \/>\nA threat of doom and gloom<br \/>\nFor what we know as our oak tree<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All of them are silent friends In unchallenged supremacy Stands the oak Its massive strength Its grandeur The tree of life for me An Oak A lover of the eternal light A great force to be reckoned with Behold the &hellip;
