Hedgerows up and down the country
\nFlourish in a twinkling they
\nUndoubtedly offer indigenous growth
\nEvery single day
\nCountry roads have an abundance
\nOf wild plants many who
\nLive around the Hawthorn
\nand share the hedge lined stew
\nThey can grow into fine specimens
\nWith trunks of some ten feet
\nAnd reach into the heavens
\nAnd, really compete
\nWith forest trees and claim a place
\nAnd on bleak hillsides they
\nAre solitary and venerable

They are a proper picture
\nOf contortion and create

\nGarlands of the fey
\nTime honoured truly are perhaps
\nwatching over us each day
\nSnow white blossoms tiny dresses
\nWho confesses to the scene
\nEven Spenser all those years ago
\nShows us that he has been
\nThompson even Shakespeare
\nNoted Its wild strain
\nTravelling through the hedgerows
\nA screen Against the rain
\nAnd afterwards the haws
\nA saxon word no doubt
\nSong birds come to share
\nTheir worth
\nThey know what they are about
\nIn China sweet meats made
\nFrom dried haws sweetened
\nTo this day
\nAre sucked by would be travellers
\nWho walk the wild highway
\nA sprig of hawthorn on ones hat
\nTis said on stormy days
\nA lightening strike
\nThere will never be
\nAnd old wives tale
\nFrom me<\/p>\n
Many a poet could not avert their eyes
\nFrom hawthorns gleam
\nLovers often seek the shadow
\nAnd perchance do dream
\nDruids in their oak groves
\nTheir ritual doth reward
\nThose who see the light and write
\nDo so with accord
\nThought to aid the heart methinks
\nIn ancient times of stress
\nThe hawthorns charm
\nIn watery calm
\nIts properties cool no less
\nWhere thorns or splinters
\nStab and fester
\nHawthorns blossom water draw
