From melt water
\nIn the Himalayas
\nAt Gangotrig we see
\nThe mighty Ganga
\nRise up on its journey to the sea
\nThrough Bangladesh and India
\nThis tumultuous display
\nRolling ever onwards
\nTo the great Bengal bay<\/p>\n
Surrounded by so many people
\n1600 miles
\nAt depths up to one hundred feet
\nTribulations yes and trials
\nA great tran-boundary river
\nHolier than thou
\nTaken on the wretchedness
\nOf the thousands asking how
\n159 million litres
\nOf faeces from one drain
\nOne billion gallons everyday
\nIt just sounds insane<\/p>\n
Unwholesomeness personified
\nContagion infectivity
\nInsalubrious rat-infested
\nCarcinogenic and filthy
\nNothing being monitored
\nHospital waste and all
\nHeavy metals corrsosive forces
\nThe pollution does appal<\/p>\n
Pesticides and chlorofluorocarbons
\nEverything that can
\nDamage human systems
\nEver since time it began
\nAnd in this massive medium
\nThe people come to pray
\nTo wash to bathe
\nTo fish to die
\nEvery single day<\/p>\n
Practising their Moksha
\nOn the kasi steps
\nThey wait
\nAnd there the bodies laden
\nOn these ghats they do cremate
\nSet alight a toe
\nAnd throw
\nThe bodies thats their way
\nAnd their soul completes its journey
\nOn any given day<\/p>\n
“Dilution is a solution
\nTo pollution” but sadly
\nDespite all of the promises
\nNo one seems to be
\nGetting on with cleaning up the river
\nAny more
\nIts really filthy dirty
\nFilled up with blood and gore<\/p>\n
They want to introduce turtles
\nThose that do eat meat
\nFor all of those dead bodies
\nOut there in all the heat
\nI think you can imagine
\nThe stench that people feel
\nAnd the dangers that are rising
\nFrom the perils that are real<\/p>\n
And there is so much dishonesty
\nAnd corruption everywhere
\nNo monitoring of poisons
\nChemicals that scare
\nThe living daylights out of us
\nAll of it tipped into
\nThe holy river Ganga
\nThe goddess mother who
\nProtects who wondrous children
