\nThe terrier men
\nWho have their work to do
\nTo have a go at the saboteurs
\na proper clueless crew
\nOften they have a terrier
\nA shovel and a spade
\nThey open gates and close them
\nAnd mend fences if its laid
\nFlushing or digging foxes out
\nShouting expletives too
\nFollowing the hunt about
\nThat is what they do<\/p>\n
Its a glorified occasion
\nThe hounds and all in flight
\nFollowing a foxes scent
\nPrelaid down its right
\nTo see the Sabs use citronella
\nHoping they dissuade
\nThe hounds to change direction
\nSo as to yea put paid
\nTo hounds getting on a real fox
\nThe vermin of the piece
\nThat’s what most hunts call them
\nThe fox just has no lease
\nDespite the law of England
\nStill hunts want the fox
\nAnd the need is to get saboteurs
\nTo expect some real hard knocks<\/p>\n
It gets noisy and aggressive
\nBut when the hounds do see
\nA fox that they can catch
\nIts hell for leather actually
\nAnd catching it they are all over it
\nBiting just like mad
\nThe fox is dispatched in minutes
\nWhich ofcourse for us is sad
\nOld dogs say 8-10 years
\nWhen their feet are wearing thin
\nWhen their names are not called out
\nThey take that on the chin
\nGet sulky and get moody
\nSo Hunts tend to do
\nIs take them out and shoot them
\nEye to eye alas its true<\/p>\n
Wild foxes are creations gift
\nVermin they are not
\nThey make their homes in marl pits
\nOr in tunnels that have got
\nsmaller due to rabbits Vacating them so they
\nAre Ideal for the foxes
\nWhere eroded tree roots play
\nA part providing shelter
\nAnd earths seen as a way
\nOld tunnel systems clearly
\nCriss cross and they can be
\nOpened up and used by foxes
\nExpeditiously
\nFoxes dig ofcourse they do
\nBut the Badgers clearly they
\nHave heavier more efficient digging tools
\nAlong the way<\/p>\n
Foxes have good hearing
\nThey are really into sound
\nRodents especially field voles
\nRunning underground
\nAll the little squeaks they make
\nThe fox is so well versed
\nHe is one of Mother Natures children
\nIts the huntsman that is cursed
\nTrapped animals the fox will often
\nHelp himself
\nAnd leaves his calling card
\nWhich may offend
\nThe trapper or the hunter
\nOr the so called countryman
\nSo wrathfulness and anger
\nCan descend<\/p>\n
Into indignation
\nFrom the farmer who may have
\nLaid a trap expecting to
\nCatch the fox but they are far too cunning
\nAnd baby birds who fall
\nIs what they do
\nThe fox clears up the victims
\nHe is always on the lookout
\nA free meal and he is off
\nAnd running through
\nThe forest through wherever
\nHis hearing
\nIs his gift
\nApproaching hounds
\nOr horses or even man or anything
\nIn leaps and bounds<\/p>\n
As I said before
\nThe Fox is a child of Nature
\nWith built in instinctive
\nKnowledge he can use
\nHe can stay still, sham sleep
\nAnd, run like the clappers
\nIn his arsenal he has every ruse
\nHe is never a philosopher
\nHis energy and verve
\nHas clearly been designed for him
\nHe runs straight and can swerve
\nImagine being chased by baying hounds
\nOut for his life
\nHe has to have the turn of speed
\nAnd overcome the strife<\/p>\n
He learns to detect enemies
\nAnd thats all done with smell
\nThere noses are spectacular
\nAnd, that holds them well
\nIts about coordination
\nSight hearing and smell
\nBut the fox is extra cunning
\nAs countryfolk do tell
\nHunting is for me a medieval
\nPractice where
\nHunters on their horses chase
\nDown a wild soul their
\nPacks of hounds, trained up to hunt
\nTake the scent and run
\nEnthused with all their wild intent
\nLike tinder in the sun<\/p>\n
Foxes know the countryside
\nEvery place where they
\nCan double back and go to earth
\nIn a smouldering display
\nThey may even hunt a vole perhaps
\nIts what the fox can do
\nOut of temper so forbidding
\nIts contempt and madness too
\nThey gallop at a fine pace
\nHead up brush kept low
\nThey look a bit untidy
\nBut seemingly they throw
\nAn awful lot of energy
\nInto their streaming gait
\nAs if they feel the baying breath
\nAnd are not about to wait<\/p>\n
He can be a scavenger
\nAnd a cleaner if you will
\nLiving on the carrion
\nThe guts that sometimes spill
\nHe also is the hunter
\nAnd A predator supreme
\nAnd can be the opportunist
\nAnd come and pinch the cream
\nChickens in a lousy coop
\nIt happens but the fox
\nIs more in tune with wild kills
\nHe cannot unpick locks
\nIts really up to humans
\nTo safeguard animals they
\nKeep for their own reasons
\nAt the end of the day<\/p>\n
The hunt, I cant abide them
\nThey get no respect from me
\nMost are wholly arrogant
\nSo dispicable they be
\nConscienceless and unashamed
\nAll sinners in a way
\nThe fox is always wicked
\nAt the butt end of each day
\nThey are the wild children
\nPut on earth to be
\nAtoning for their past lives
