They forecast high winds and some rain
\nA down pour on the way
\nBut when we got to the rollright stones
\nIts blue skies and a play
\nOn words for me
\nfor the sun was out
\nShining pretty bright
\nWe formed our circle held hands a while
\nAnd opened the quarters
\nand the light
\nFadeth a bit and the wind got up
\nAnd the trees around us shook
\nTheir crowns were really feeling it
\nWho is for another look
\nThen we enjoyed a playlet
\nOf the three men from the west
\nThey were after John Barleycorn
\nThey buried him they did
\nPloughed him sowed him harrowed him
\nReally in a bid<\/p>\n
They let him lie
\nBeneath the sod
\nAnd made a solemn vow
\nThat he could stay lost to the world
\nAnd they would show us how<\/p>\n
So they went away just left him be
\nLet the rain pour down and he
\nSurprised us all when
\nHe just leapt up
\nAs healthy as could be<\/p>\n
They got this bloke
\nWith scythes so sharp
\nTo cut him at the knee
\nThey rolled him over
\nThey didnt care but to show him
\nCruelty<\/p>\n
Another man with a sharp pitch fork
\nTo strike him in his heart
\nAnd the other bound him head to tow
\nAnd slung him in their cart
\nThey took him around the field
\nAll day
\nTill he came up to the barn
\nAnd each then made an oath And said
\nPoor John barleycorn<\/p>\n
They hIred a man with crab-tree sticks
\nTo scratch his skin and bone
\nAnd then they asked tHe miller man to grind
\nHim on his stone
\nBut john was really up to it
\nWith some brandy in his glass
\nHe proved that he could take them on
\nA true man he first class<\/p>\n
And as for the so called huntsman
\nWho could never catch his foe
\nAnd rarely could they hear the horn
\nWhen ever it did blow
\nAnd nobody is able to mend or else to be
\nWorth their salt one has to say
\nWithout Barleycorn there as key<\/p>\n
The play was acted admirably
\nWith aggression knots and All
\nOnto the mead and the apricots
\nAnd the cakes and the poets call
\nAn ode about the autumn
\nAbout the natural wheel
\nWhich is forever turning
\nAnd that no one can conceal<\/p>\n
Then we had the talking stick
\nAnd we lost the sky of blue
\nIt disappeared in a wodge of cloud
\nAnd some rain and hail came too
\nAround the circle with snake stick
\nTill everyone had said
\nTheir piece their poems
\nWhatever
\nAnd by that time were led<\/p>\n
Out of the grey and the wodge of cloud
\nBack to a sky of blue
\nBack to the wind a cutting wind
\nI was almost cut in two
\nOnto the closing of quarters
\nAnd the favoured ho ho ho
\nAnd despite the chilly wind a blowing
\nCold enough for snow<\/p>\n
We sll just mingled calmly
\nTaking the light that became
\nBright it licked the colours of the leaves
\nSome were aflame
\nwith orange and with crimson
\nSulphur yes by name
\nCadmium and mustard
\nA cool kaleidescope
\nof colour
\nTo amaze the eyes
\nAnd bring us all some hope
\n.
\nThe moles had clearly not been put
\nOff
\nEnjoying their hills and dales
\nFreshly dug the colour was
\nInspired by wagging tails
\nAnd sharp claws no doubt
\nBlindly
\ntearing at the sod
\nIn darkness moles dont really care
\nAs They are closer to their god.<\/p>\n
The stones they looked resplendent
\nPicked out in the light
\nThe colours of the countryside
\nAltogether bright
\ndappling and stippling
\nFretted and patterened too
\nNot many people came along
